The Patient Care Coordinator supports patients and clinical teams by managing high-volume inbound calls, coordinating prescription refills, ordering labs, updating electronic medical records, and ensuring timely follow-ups. This role blends medical assisting or pharmacy technician experience with strong customer service skills in a fast-paced contact center environment.
Responsibilities

Answer a high volume of inbound phone calls from patients, providers, pharmacies, and other stakeholders in a professional and courteous manner.

Conduct follow-up calls with patients to gather updates, confirm appointments, and support ongoing care plans.

Perform accurate and timely data entry of patient updates and clinical information into the electronic medical record system (Athena EMR).

Handle electronic refill prescriptions (ERX), including processing requests and coordinating with providers and pharmacies as needed.

Order laboratory tests as directed, ensuring accuracy in test selection and patient information.

Relay lab results to patients and providers according to established protocols and documentation standards.

Process prior authorizations and referrals, working closely with insurance and clinical teams to support patient access to medications and services.

Use platforms such as CoverMyMeds or similar tools to manage medication prior authorizations and refills.

Schedule and manage patient follow-up appointments, ensuring appropriate timing and clear communication with patients.

Provide clinical support within the scope of a Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician, as appropriate to training and experience.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic medical records, including medical history, medications, and communication logs.

Deliver excellent customer service by listening carefully, addressing concerns, and escalating issues when necessary.

Collaborate with other team members in the contact center and clinical staff to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.

Adhere to all healthcare, privacy, and documentation standards while handling sensitive patient information.

Support front desk-type functions as needed, including basic administrative tasks related to patient scheduling and documentation.
Essential Skills

At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician.

At least 1 year of experience working in a high call volume environment, such as a contact or call center.

Hands-on experience with electronic medical records (EMR), preferably Athena.

Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare documentation practices.

Experience handling electronic refill prescriptions (ERX) and prescription-related workflows.

Experience ordering labs and documenting lab orders accurately.

Experience with prior authorizations and referrals in a medical or pharmacy setting.

Strong customer service skills in a healthcare or call center environment.

Proficiency in data entry with high accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to manage 100+ calls per day while maintaining professionalism and quality.

High School Diploma.

Background in medical assisting or pharmacy support in a clinical or healthcare setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Certification or formal training as a Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician is beneficial.

Experience with CoverMyMeds or similar platforms for prior authorizations and medication management.

Familiarity with electronic health record and electronic medical record systems beyond Athena.

Knowledge of insurance processes, including prior authorization and coverage verification.

Experience in clinical support roles such as front desk, medical records, or general healthcare administration.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is a plus.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain medical information clearly to patients.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, metrics-driven contact center environment.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks throughout the day.

Comfort working with healthcare teams, including providers, nurses, and pharmacy staff.
Work Environment
This role is based onsite in a contact center environment, where you will take approximately 100 or more calls per day supporting patients and healthcare providers. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing a consistent daytime workweek. You will work primarily with electronic medical record systems, including Athena EMR, as well as tools for electronic prescriptions, lab ordering, and prior authorizations. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and focused on patient care and customer service. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Orlando, FL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
