  • Hourly Range: $19.63 - $29.45 (Determined by function, education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant. A 15% salary uplift is provided on top of base salary for positions that are worked in New York City or San Francisco, which is subject to change depending on market conditions.)

Project Overview:

ES&H teams are comprised of three distinct disciplines that collectively support our ES&H Management System and processes at project sites and offices. These teams include environmental scientists, safety professionals, and industrial hygiene scientists. Collectively, they provide technical guidance and perform planning, risk assessment, inspections and monitoring, training, and data management.

Locations will vary based on project needs and may include offices, facilities, or construction sites located throughout the U.S.

Job Summary:

Environmental Scientist Interns help develop and execute the environmental component of an Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) program. Key activities involve administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position involves practical application of biology, ecology, chemistry, social sciences, and related disciplines for managing environmental aspects of a project or facility.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Helps integrate environmental requirements into project planning, permitting, design, construction, and operations.

  • Assists with development and implementation of environmental permits, plans, and studies.

  • Helps with site assessments and surveys to identify site conditions and develop mitigation and sustainability strategies to protect the environment and local communities.

  • Assists with technical guidance and support regarding mitigation measures pertaining to natural and cultural resources and communities.

  • Provides technical assistance within ES&H teams and to other project groups regarding permitting, risk assessment, plan preparation, studies, and ES&H program execution.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of Environmental Management Plans and associated plans and procedures.

  • Helps identify and track environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder concerns.

  • Participates in emergency response, and aids investigation and resolution of ES&H incidents.

  • Performs environmental monitoring, sampling, and inspections to confirm compliance with permits and project requirements and commitments.

  • Prepares training documents and helps implement training for project/facility employees and visitors.

  • Participates in meetings with customers, project/facility team members, and contractors and subcontractors to advise them of environmental requirements that may affect their work.

  • Performs data management, trend analysis, and report preparation and review.

  • Assists other team members in ES&H program execution, inclusive of safety and health.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, or a Master of Science (MS) degree, from an accredited university or college in an applicable technical discipline such as environmental sciences, biological sciences, natural resources, or related applicable disciplines.

  • Knowledge of environmental impact assessment and mitigation strategies.

  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.

  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.

  • Analytical skills related to sampling, monitoring, and recordkeeping.

  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.

  • Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.

  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 Management System standards.

  • Prior work experience related to environmental or biological (field) sciences.

  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.

  • Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed.
