STW: Undergraduate Research Assistant

The Duke Energy Smart Grid Lab within the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Undergraduate Research Assistant to support ongoing research and lab operations. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in energy and power systems to gain hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, simulation tools, and applied research projects in a collaborative academic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assist with the maintenance, development, and organization of laboratory      documentation, including equipment reference materials, walkthroughs, and technical specifications
• Support graduate students, research staff, and faculty with projects involving laboratory equipment and experimental setups
• Contribute to the ongoing overhaul, improvement, and reorganization of lab systems and processes
• Perform routine research support tasks, including data collection, basic analysis, calculations, and record keeping
• Complete assigned projects with attention to detail and minimal supervision

Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at UNC Charlotte in good academic standing
• Ability to commit 20 hours per week to lab responsibilities
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
• Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
• Coursework or concentration in Energy and Power Systems or a related engineering discipline
• Familiarity with programming and simulation tools such as MATLAB and/or Python
• Demonstrated ability to follow through on projects and resolve technical challenges methodically

This is an entry-level research position designed for students who are eager to learn. Prior hands-on lab experience is not required; however, applicants who can demonstrate initiative, persistence, and engagement in past academic or technical projects will be given strong consideration.
