Job Description

The Schiele Museum of Natural History is seeking staff for an incredible summer! This role is a fantastic opportunity for individuals passionate about education and natural history. Summer Camp Counselors play a crucial role in shaping the summer experience of rising 1st – 6th graders. If you enjoy working with youth, have a strong commitment to education, and are willing to learn the necessary skills, this position at the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, NC could be a great fit for you.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Educational Program Support: Assist in the effective delivery of educational programming in the morning. You will be paired with an educator each week. The educator plans and executes the activities while counselors assist the educators and help ensure an equitable experience for all kids!
  • Mentoring and Monitoring: Create a safe and nurturing environment for kids to learn about science and the world around them! You are the first person kids will come to with their questions and problems. You will monitor children throughout the day from educational programming, free play during check in and out, lunch time, and afternoon activities. Your mission is to ensure safety and fun for campers.
  • Activity Leadership: In the afternoons, counselors will help lead and organize various activities that align to museum’s educational goals and engage children in meaningful experiences. This includes crafts, games, field trips, pool trips, and activities.

    • Qualifications: 

    • Experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Ability to work well within a team and independently
    • Passion for natural history and a commitment to fostering a love for learning in children

    *If any of the above skills are not met right now, a willingness to learn and develop.* 

    • Valid Driver’s License (ability/willingness to drive a 15 passenger van is preferred)
