Strategic Insight Summer Intern

Job Summary and Description:

Come and join the Strategic Insight (SI) team for the summer of 2025. The SI team works on researching on emerging technologies within energy sector. The team works with EPRI subject matter experts all from Transmissions to Distribution to Nuclear and Generation. The topics are very much related toward renewables, decarbonized energy resources and processes, microgrids, power system operation and planning to accelerate the clean energy transition.

Key activities may include:

  • Conduct research and analysis on the assigned topics in collaboration with SMEs across EPRIs wide ranging programs such as Generation, Nuclear, Transmission & Distribution, Electrification

  • Produce publications on the assigned area of research on various topics related to energy sector

  • Interact with various EPRI Subject matter experts to create the research publications

  • Research on background material/data for the key project the student is involved with

Deliverables / Expected Outcomes

  • Working closely with the SI team on publications for EPRI's thought leadership offerings.

  • Final week presentation on projects worked on during the summer, achievements, learnings and goals.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would possess at least some of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of power sector and systems operations.

  • Experience with data analysis, technical presentation and writing skills as this role involves producing reports, insight briefs, and snapshot materials.

  • Basic knowledge of power system engineering, economics, and operations (transmission and distribution power flow modeling, power system dynamics modeling)

  • Basic knowledge of power electronics - modeling, design, and build experimentation

  • Programming in Python, Julia, or R Knowledge of electricity industry organization and structure

  • Familiarity with the published literature and policies relating to climate change impacts, adaptation, and equity, climate scenarios

  • Excellent research and writing skills; strong oral communications skills; ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.

  • A positive attitude, comfortable working both collaboratively and independently.

The hourly rate range for Student positions are:

  • Undergraduate: $16-29 per hour

  • Masters: $25-31 per hour

  • Ph.D: $27-34 per hour

These ranges are an estimate, and the actual hourly rate may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The hourly rate may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.

As an EPRI Student, you will not participate in EPRI's Benefit Programs which includes health insurance, retirement benefits, vacation, sick leave (except as set required by law) and holiday pay. However, as a Student employee you are eligible for the benefits of Social Security, State Disability Insurance, and Workers' Compensation Insurance.

For Student positions which require one to relocate to an EPRI office. Relocation assistance is not provided and the student will be responsible for covering all relocation costs/expenses.

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
