Job Description

International House (IH) is a nonprofit organization that empowers immigrants and international culture to thrive in Charlotte. International House enriches the lives of immigrants, residents, and the community of Charlotte through cross-cultural connections that foster understanding and fuel inspiration. Our hands-on programs help immigrants settle and succeed in this region while helping residents and businesses connect with people and cultures from around the world. We offer direct services through our immigration law clinic, Adult ESL classes, and after school tutoring program for elementary multilingual students in select Charlotte Mecklenburg schools (CMS). We also offer several cultural enrichment programs including Conversation Hours in various languages and an International Book Club.

Our youth programs are coordinated through Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) at select school sites throughout the school year. Our afterschool tutoring program, Rising Up takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-5:00, depending on the school site. Our summer youth program, Rising Readers, is a 6 week “summer camp” to prevent the summer slide for multilingual learners.

Interns will have the opportunity to focus their efforts on educational programs and initiatives that align with their learning objectives such as gaining teaching experience.

Roles and Responsibilities:

· Report to and support Youth Education Coordinator

· Lesson planning and unit design for youth programs (afterschool tutoring and summer program)

· Supporting and carrying out research-based community literacy initiatives

· Community engagement and networking

· Visit sites and deliver materials as needed

· Help adults register their ESL children for youth programs and clarify program details

· Work alongside volunteer assistants and paid afterschool tutors to provide instruction and assessment to participants

· Act as a teaching assistant, substitute teach as needed, etc.

· Data collection and analysis

· Work on special projects to support Education Department programs as needed.
