The Internship
Special Collections and University Archives at J. Murrey Atkins Library is seeking an assistant to work with digital archival records. This position will work closely with the Digital Archivist, as well as the University Archivist, Oral Historian and other members of Special Collections and University Archives team as necessary.
Job duties:
• Working directly with electronic (born-digital) archival material
• Transferring records from physical or web-based media to a computer storage system
• Arranging files based on archival standards
• Describing the material using archival standards
• Creating metadata (description of materials in a specific format)
• Other duties as assigned
Work Duties:
• Ingest (transfer and image) media (50%)
• Create technical and descriptive metadata and checksums (40%)
• Other born-digital assignments as necessary (10%)
Required Skills:
• Knowledge of Microsoft Windows 11
• Independent thinking and troubleshooting skills
• Ability to work independently at a computer performing routine repetitive tasks
• Ability to work under supervision performing complex tasks
Preferred Skills:
• Experience with computer media
• Experience with computer file systems
• Knowledge of archival processing
• Knowledge of DACS and MPLP
Learning Experience
UIP Digital Archives Assistants will gain hands-on experience using computer hardware and software for digital preservation, arrangement, and description. Student interns will learn and apply fundamental archival principles and use problem-solving skills, building their knowledge of the information management profession. Students will work in an office environment, performing work independently and under supervision of the managing archivist. Students will work directly with historical records of permanent enduring value related to the history of the Charlotte region and UNC Charlotte, and have access to professional training and webinars related to the archival and library science professions.
Outcomes
• Students will work directly to help eliminate the backlog of uningested born-digital manuscript collection material and University Archives material on physical media
• Students will help to make the digital materials accessible and available to the public in collaboration with the Digital Archivist through the use of technical, preservation, and descriptive metadata
• Students will help fulfill Special Collections and University Archives' public service mission to provide access to and preservation of unique historical material of enduring value
• Students will gain experience in office and computer work, archival standards, and digital best practices
