Redlair Observatory Internship – Redlair Preserve, Gaston County
Protect Rare & Endangered Species
Join us at the spectacular Redlair Preserve in Gaston County, a unique sanctuary of century-old hardwood forests that harbor both the largest concentration of the Bigleaf Magnolia in North Carolina and the federally endangered Schweinitz's Sunflower. As a Redlair Observatory Intern, you'll have a hands-on role in conserving some of North Carolina's most special plant species.
What You’ll Do:
- Immerse yourself in the local ecology and apply various conservation practices for habitat improvement
- Receive one-on-one instruction from the Redlair Land Steward
- Clear brush and blowdown with hand tools
- Manage invasive species using mechanical and chemical methods
- Monitor and maintain preserve boundaries
- Maintain and repair tools and equipment (backpack sprayers, hand tools, etc.)
Bonus Opportunities:
- Work with NC State professionals, acclaimed UNCC professors, and local researchers on various ecological projects
- Assist in prescribed burns and fire break installations
- Contribute to rare plant monitoring
