An overview of the Project Engineers' responsibilities include:
- Supporting project management
- Maintaining accurate job quantities
- Reviewing pay estimates
- Creating Supplemental Agreements for submission
- Completing and submitting weekly reports (e.g., subcontractor work log, meter reading report, weekly equipment report)
- Serving as the primary contact with subcontractors
- Reviewing and approving timesheets
- Conducting Erosion Control inspections and maintaining Log Erosion Control sheets
- Maintaining and running an active crew when needed
- Being actively involved with conducting field layouts with GPS
- Participating in traffic control activities and OUPS call-ins
Position Overview
The primary responsibility of the Project Engineer will be to measure, verify, and document work performed by subcontractors during the project. An understanding of subcontractor schedules and work tasks will be gained through interaction with senior project staff. Following onsite training, this individual will be expected to function somewhat independently and play a key role in determining proper payment to subcontractors.
Through the course of the work, the individual will become familiar with certain aspects of contract management and gain an understanding of construction plans and specifications. Organization, planning, time management, interpersonal communication, flexibility, basic math, and attention to detail will be essential to success in this position.
This opportunity is unique in that it will give the individual exposure to all facets of road and bridge construction without being tied to any particular discipline. The Project Engineer will have the chance to be a part of a project from start to finish, from tree removal to the first vehicles traveling on the newly opened roadway.
In the early stages, expect to gain experience in clearing and grubbing, erosion control, trenchless pipe installation, and box culvert construction. As the project progresses, the individual will be exposed to earthmoving, bridge and sound wall construction, underground utilities, storm drains, and subgrade preparation. Later phases will include asphalt paving, striping, guardrail installation, traffic signals, and signage.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
- Excellent interpersonal communication, including both oral and written skills
- Computer skills, including proficiency with CAD and Microsoft Excel preferred
- Strong ability to work autonomously with active management involvement
- Demonstrated ability to promote a safe work environment
- Ability to problem-solve and adapt to changing circumstances
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask and work well under pressure
- Capacity to work independently and within a team environment
- Organizational & communication skills
- Willingness to learn and desire to have a positive impact in a team environment
Highway construction experience is not required, but the willingness to learn and contribute positively in a team environment is essential.
