Job Description

Peer Advisors serve UNC Charlotte as paraprofessionals in the centralized Peer Hub located on campus within Niner Central and in partnership with the Division of Undergraduate Education.

  • $12 per hour, 12 - 20 hours a week, flexible schedule available.

Trained Peer Advisors provide “on-demand” general advising services to undergraduate students, primarily freshmen & sophomores. Peer Advisors assist students to utilize academic systems like DegreeWorks, Student Self Service, Schedule Wizard, and CONNECT/Navigate. Peer Advisors provide on campus resource referrals for academic and non-academic concerns and facilitate students to the appropriate resource(s) for their needs. Peer Advisors work with students through various interactions including 1:1 meetings (in person & virtual), small group advising support (in person & virtual), phone calls, and email.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist students with general advising needs such as: creating class schedules, searching & registering for classes, understanding academic planning tools & software, locating the most appropriate academic support resources, explaining academic policies, and preparing students for their academic advising appointments.
  • Be responsive to students' concerns and follow up if questions cannot be answered during the first interaction.
  • Communicate any provided student advising services & referrals for the awareness and follow up of assigned Academic Advisor.
  • Appropriately refer students to Academic Advisors or other university faculty/staff for academic and non-academic concerns.
  • Become familiar with academic regulations and university core requirements through assigned training and self-directed study.
  • Actively participate in weekly mentoring & development meetings to advance individual professionalism, team collaboration, critical thinking, interpersonal ‘soft’ skills, & holistic customer/client needs awareness toward post-graduation career readiness.
  • Advertise the Peer Advising Hub to all undergraduate students through group sessions, campus events, email, and phone outreach.
  • Represent the university as a student ambassador at selected university events such as Admitted Students' Day, New Student Orientation, Registration Week, etc.
  • Provide support to Academic Advising Centers and Peer Hub partner offices by working on projects and outreach campaigns that include but are not limited to: assisting with group advising presentations, new student orientation registration, records/financial aid requirements, and pre-registration outreach.

Specific requirements include:

  • Must be an undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, or Senior and have completed at least one full-time semester at Charlotte.
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled full-time at UNC Charlotte during Fall 2026.
  • Must have above average communication & interpersonal skills and/or the desire to develop them.
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality in compliance with FERPA.
  • Must be available to complete new hire training (in person and Canvas) prior to start of classes.
  • Must have availability to work throughout the full term including "no class" days when university offices are open (ex. Spring/Fall Recess, intersession).
  • Must be eager to serve current and prospective students.

Position is for Summer 2026 with potential to continue through Fall 2026.
