Job Description

This is a criminal defense firm focusing on high-stakes federal criminal defense and investigations. You will shadow attorneys in court, sit in on witness and client interviews (at the jail, the office, in the field), help with investigations, draft press releases, manage a calendar, and format legal filings.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn and be able to describe the fundamental stages of a federal criminal case.
  • Understand the various stakeholders in the criminal justice system.
  • Develop diplomatic and professional communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Very strong emphasis on improving the student’s writing and communication skills.

Supervision and Resources

  • As required by law, the student will at all times be under the supervision of attorney John J. Dowling III (owner of the firm).
  • Student will have a dedicated desk space (largest in the office) with commercial-grade printer and scanner, and an iMac.

Other

  • Student will accompany attorneys to court appearances, jail visits, and witness interviews.

  • The student will help with factual investigations in criminal cases by examining publicly available resources, as well as evidence provided by the government.
