Join the Office of Regional Development to research the impact of land use and transportation planning on the ability of older adults to "age in place." In this position, you will get firsthand supporting staff with planning an educational event to inform regional planning, researching best practices for land use and transportation for aging in place locally and nationally, and presenting your research to policymakers.

The Office of Regional Development works collaboratively with state and local governments, businesses, and community organizations to support healthy, vibrant, and accessible communities for all Salt Lake County residents.   We are seeking applicants with an interest in regional planning, organizational and event planning skills, strong quantitative analysis skills, and the ability to communicate research to a general audience. Under the direction of our Municipal Services and Planning Program Manager and Director of Regional Planning and Transportation, you will lead research and support planning for the 2024 Regional Solutions Event to be held on October 2ndon the topic of aging in place. The keynote speaker for the event is Danielle Arigoni, who will be discussing her book, Climate Resilience for an Aging Nation, and event partners include AARP, APA Utah, the Healthy and Resilient Places Lab at the University of Utah, and Salt Lake County Aging and Adult Services. The event will discuss housing, transportation, and climate resilience for older adults.

  Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. The primary work location will be the Salt Lake County Government Center. Telework is allowed up to three days per week, although we highly recommend more time in the office for networking and activities with the internship cohort.

  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Gather, analyze, and interpret data that informs policy.

• Prepare concise reports, pamphlets, and presentations to explain research findings to community members and planners/local leaders.

• Develop a capstone presentation to present your research at the Regional Solutions Event.

• Read and interpret complex laws, regulations, ordinances, and reports.

• Manage projects and relationships with internal and external research partners, including staff and other interns.

• Deliver executive briefings on research and policy options for elected officials and other leaders.

• Participate in professional development programs offered by Intern Program Managers.

• Support event planning needs from staff.

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent quantitative analysis skills.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Understanding of the principles and functions of local government.

• Ability to complete tasks under deadlines.

• Curiosity, creativity, adaptability, organization, and attention to detail.

• Be a team player who also excels as an individual contributor.

  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience or coursework in urban planning, housing, transportation, community development, economic development, or related field.

• Experience with graphic design.

  PAY: $15.00/hour for undergraduate students or $18.00/hour for graduate students

  START DATE: The internship begins May 20th, 2024, and ends August 2, 2024.

  WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  Interns may work remotely or from the Salt Lake County Government Center. They will be provided with a computer and an email account. Interns may be asked to attend meetings off-site, at other government facilities, and in the community. Interns may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.
