Job Description
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Java Full Stack Developer to support a major modernization initiative that will transition legacy disability and leave claims systems to a modern, cloud-based platform. You will work across a diverse technology landscape, contributing to both immediate platform consolidation and long-term cloud-native transformation.
In this role, you will leverage your expertise in Java enterprise applications, legacy system integration, microservices, AWS, and BPM tools such as Appian. You will apply agile engineering practices to build efficient, scalable solutions that enhance both customer and employee experiences.
In this role, you will:
• Contribute to the consolidation of legacy claims applications by enhancing the System One platform to align with DocsNet functionality.
• Design, develop, and maintain Java-based backend services using Spring MVC and Spring Boot .
• Support the gradual migration to a cloud-native architecture built in parallel to existing systems.
• Build and expose RESTful APIs to support BPM workflows, UI components, and downstream consumers.
• Develop and enhance Spring Boot microservices for core business logic and data management.
• Ensure all data access aligns with governed API and target architecture standards.
• Integrate services with internal systems (policy administration, claims, payments, treasury, identity services) and external portals.
• Collaborate with BPM teams using Appian for workflow orchestration and low/no-code UI development.
• Work within legacy technologies, including:
§ JSP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS
§ Java on Tomcat
§ Sybase with extensive T-SQL
§ UNIX batch processing (~800 ksh scripts)
§ SQR reporting
• Participate in modernization efforts while ensuring operational stability.
• Develop and deploy services using AWS technologies (Fargate, Lambda, S3, Aurora PostgreSQL).
• Containerize applications using Docker .
• Support CI/CD pipelines via GitLab .
• Work in hybrid runtime models (on-prem Docker + AWS).
• Follow disciplined change management and integration governance.
• Write unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito .
• Support secure API design using OAuth-based authentication .
• Engage in code reviews, architectural discussions, and cross-team collaboration.

What you need to have to be considered
• Technical Skills & Experience
• Strong proficiency in Java , JSP , Spring MVC , and Spring Boot .
• Experience with Tomcat application servers .
• Hands-on experience designing and developing REST APIs .
• Solid understanding of relational databases (Sybase or PostgreSQL preferred).
• Strong SQL skills, including Transact SQL (T-SQL) .
• Experience with AWS services (Fargate, Lambda, S3, Aurora PostgreSQL).
• Experience with Docker containerization.
• CI/CD experience using GitLab .
• Experience with UNIX shell scripting .
• Familiarity with batch processing and reporting tools (SQR preferred).
• Education & Core Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, IT, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
• Strong collaborator and communicator.
• Experience working in Agile environments and with DevOps practices.
• Background in refactoring, design patterns, design-driven development, continuous deployment, scalable apps, and security.
This will help you stand out
• Experience with BPM platforms (e.g., Appian).
• Exposure to large-scale legacy modernization initiatives.
• Experience working in hybrid (on-prem + cloud) environments.
• Familiarity with OAuth-based security models .
• Experience in insurance, claims, or financial services industries.
Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $70,000 to $117,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant's discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant's applicable plans.
