Gig: Digital Welcome Guide & Interactive Map
UNC Charlotte Gig Training Program
Campus Internship
Closes on Friday, August 14, 2026
Job Description
The Family & Supporter Engagement Team is committed to building meaningful partnerships with families as an essential part of the UNC Charlotte experience. We believe that when families are informed, connected, and engaged, students are better supported and positioned for success. Here you'll learn more about Family Weekend, Niner Nation Family Association, Family Council, the 49er Family Hub, 49er Family Fund, and other campus and virtual resources. Our goal is to empower families with the tools and community connections needed to confidently champion their students from orientation through graduation.
The Project
Create a mobile-friendly digital guide or custom Google Map layer for Family Weekend (Sept 25-27). It could include "Student Favorites" (best coffee on campus, best photo spots with Norm the Niner) to help families navigate beyond the standard campus map. Intern would also assist with event support throughout the weekend.
Skillset: Content creation, User Experience (UX).
Timeline: Starting 2 weeks prior to Family Weekend would be ideal (~Sept 7-11)
Learning Experience
1. Applied User Experience Design: The student will learn to think from a specific user’s perspective (parents, grandparents, family members, etc.). They must consider font size, ease of navigation on a mobile device while walking, and how to present complex information (like parking or stadium gates) simply.
2. Project Management & Scoping: With a strict 40-hour limit, the student learns how to scope a project. They will have to decide which features are "must-haves" (the map) versus "nice-to-haves" (video clips) to meet the deadline.
3. Stakeholder Communication: The student acts as a consultant for our office. They will learn how to take the vision for Family Weekend and translate it into a functional digital product, gaining experience in receiving and implementing professional feedback.
Outcomes
By the end of the gig, the student should deliver a "Digital Toolkit" that our office can immediately deploy.
1. The Core Deliverable: Custom Interactive Map
A customized Google Maps layer or a mobile-optimized webpage (using a tool like Canva's "Link in Bio" websites or a specific university-approved platform).
The "Niner Nation" Layer: Pinpointed locations for "Essential Stops" (Registration, Tailgate, Halton Arena) and "Student Favorites" (The Botanical Gardens, the best places for Photos, and local coffee shops like Thoughtful Cup).
Accessibility Info: Specific markers for ADA-compliant paths or elevator locations near major Family Weekend event sites.
2. Visual Content Assets
Standardized Map Icons: A set of custom-designed icons (e.g., a green crown for photo spots, a coffee cup for cafes) to make the map visually intuitive.
Photo Spot Guide: A short PDF or digital gallery featuring "Example Photos" to show families exactly where to stand to get the best campus shots.
3. User Navigation Instructions
The "How-To" Guide: A one-page instructional sheet (or a graphic for social media) explaining how families can save the interactive map to their phone’s home screen for easy access during the weekend.
4. The "Transition" Handover Document
A brief document outlining how to update the map for next year, including any "lessons learned" during the creation process and a list of all logins or links used.
