General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible skilled work driving sanitation packer trucks on multiple prescribed routes for the collection of trash, recyclables, limbs, leaves and other yard waste.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this class drive large sanitation packer trucks on assigned residential routes to collect and dispose of yard waste, curbside trash, and other solid waste. Work involves serving as a lead worker, ensuring crew safety and work quality. Work requires skill in the operation of packer trucks in tight spaces, in the dark, and/or on crowded streets. Employee is subject to hazards of sanitation work including working in an outside environment exposed to extreme cold, heat, noise, atmospheric conditions, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, oils and skin irritants. Work is also subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision of division management and reviewed by observation and by public satisfaction of service level.

Duties and Responsibilities

Drives sanitation packer truck over prescribed routes to collect curbside trash, limbs, leaves and various yard waste and to established disposal areas. Conducts thorough pre-trip inspections and performs other routine preventative maintenance cleans equipment and deodorizes the trucks. May supervise one or more sanitation laborers in the loading and unloading of refuse, recyclables, limbs, leaves and various yard waste; instructs employees in standard methods of refuse collection and disposal; ensures their safety on the route. May answer questions from citizens regarding sanitation procedures. Fills in as driver or worker on other crews. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and minimum of six months of experience in related sanitation or equipment operation.

Special Requirement:  Possession of a valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License. Class A preferred.
