About GenOne:
GenOne is a nonprofit that partners with talented, first-generation students from underserved communities, helping them successfully navigate into and through college.
GenOne’s program identifies high performing, rising seventh graders attending Title I public middle schools in Charlotte and involves students and their families in year-round college and career preparatory programs lasting through college graduation. Scholars become “scholarship-ready” by junior year with GenOne’s support on standardized testing, financial aid, applications, scholarship searches and career planning. Additionally, Scholars gain invaluable experience through cohort gatherings and field trips, after school clubs, life skills training, and workforce development and mentoring relationships.
Founded in 2016 by two CMS middle school teachers, GenOne launched as a CMS program at Eastway Middle School with 10 inaugural 8th grade Scholars. Today, GenOne partners with 300 talented, first-generation Scholars grades K8 - college.
Position Overview:
The Marketing & Fundraising Intern (“Intern”) will play a key role in telling GenOne’s story, advancing our brand presence, and driving more charitable contributions to the organization.
The Intern will report to the Director of Development & Communications (“Supervisor”) and will collaborate with the supervisor to set strategy and growth targets for GenOne’s social media channels and donor newsletter, write social media content and Scholar stories, support annual giving campaigns and events, and provide fundraising administrative support like prospect research, database hygiene and donor stewardship. The Intern may also work on special projects like updating and producing fundraising collateral and enhancing the GenOne website (content improvements, SEO and analytics, etc.).
What You’ll Do:
Marketing and Communications (60% of time):
- Write and post compelling and engaging social media content on a weekly basis. Engage with other industry or partner accounts on social media platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram by liking and commenting.
- Strategize with supervisor on ways to scale GenOne’s social media and donor newsletter audience to meet established departmental growth targets.
- As scheduled, attend GenOne events and programs to capture compelling pictures, videos and stories to be used for marketing and communications purposes.
- Other special projects could include producing fundraising collateral, enhancing the content, SEO and analytics of the GenOne website, etc.
Fundraising (30% of time):
- Help design the strategy and creative collateral for an annual spring/early summer fundraising campaign.
- Produce prospect research “briefs” on GenOne donors to support supervisor and Executive Director with fundraising meetings.
- Engage in donor stewardship activities like writing donor thank you notes, making thank you phone calls, capturing thank yous from Scholars to be used in creative ways, etc.
- As needed, support supervisor and the Fundraising Committee with planning quarterly donor cultivation and stewardship events.
- Periodically support the supervisor with database hygiene to update donor records and gift entry.
Administrative (10% of time):
- Attend weekly 1:1s with the supervisor to discuss ongoing work projects, deadlines, etc.
- Attend hour-long, bi-weekly GenOne team and monthly Fundraising Committee meetings.
- Additional projects will be determined in collaboration with your supervisor and based on the Interns interests and needs of the organization.
What You’ll Gain:
- Mentorship and practical marketing, communications and fundraising experience in a small, startup-like nonprofit environment.
- Skill development in content creation, social media management, annual giving campaign design, donor-centric writing, and donor management.
- The opportunity to help grow the brand presence and fundraising efforts for a scaling nonprofit.
- Access to other seasoned nonprofit professionals and board members through attending regular meetings. Depending on interest, there may also be potential to join fundraising meetings with your supervisor or Executive Director.
Ideal Fit:
You might be a great fit if you’re a strong writer who’s passionate about educational equity, loves working behind the scenes to make an impact, and is excited to grow real-world marketing and fundraising skills in a mission-driven organization. You enjoy crafting stories that inspire others to take action, and you’re energized by using social media and creative fundraising campaigns to grow brand awareness and rally support for a cause you believe in.
What You’ll Bring:
- A willingness to learn from mistakes and keep growing.
- Comfort working without a strict playbook with a basis towards action and figuring things out.
- Strong writing skills, especially when it comes to storytelling and crafting clear, engaging messages for a variety of audiences.
- A sharp eye for detail and a habit of leaving things better than you found them.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with an ability to work under tight timelines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- A passion for educational equity and/or the college access and success space, or desire to learn.
- Experience using Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn for a business or student organization is a must.
- GenOne is a Google Workspace company, so comfort using GSuite applications is a must.
- Experience using social media scheduling software like Hootsuite or a willingness to learn is preferred.
- Experience with design tools like Canva is strongly preferred but not required.
- Willingness to learn how to use Bloomerang CRM for fundraising-related projects.
Expectations:
- Interns will be expected to work 8-10 hours per week for the duration of their internship.
- Preference will be for interns to work in-office for the majority of their hours each week, but GenOne has a hybrid work schedule and there will be opportunities for remote flexibility. As such, the ability to get to and from the GenOne office is required.
- Interns are expected to use their personal laptop to complete work. If this presents a barrier, GenOne can provide access to a Chromebook.
- Specific work projects will be agreed upon by the Intern and supervisor during the first week and will continue to be adjusted, as needed, throughout the internship.
