The Land Trust Alliance is the voice of the land trust community. As the national leader in policy, standards and education, we work passionately to support land trusts across America so they can save more land and better serve their communities.

The Alliance is seeking to elevate land conservation as a priority nationwide. We envision a reenergized, more relevant conservation movement in which land trusts join with partners that have not traditionally identified as conservation organizations, including from the for-profit sector, around our shared interest of protecting special places.

Summary Description

Help strengthen land conservation across America and see the results of your work on the national stage. We’re looking for a project intern starting in February, 2026 to support the next National Land Trust Census.

A smooth data collection process is integral to the success of the Census—one of the Alliance’s most prominent, public-facing projects and a critical resource for land trust success. This intern will provide essential support to make responding to the Census survey as easy as possible for the more than 700 organizations we expect to participate.

The start and end dates are flexible, but ideally through at least May 31, 2026. This is a paid position of 30 hours per week. Location is flexible—you may choose to work remotely or in the Alliance’s DC office.

The ideal candidate is a student or early-career professional with an interest in land conservation and in the nuts and bolts of creating the most comprehensive data source for land protected by private non-profit organizations in the United States. You’ll find that interning for a small organization will give you ample opportunities to interact directly with land trusts across the country and to shape the story of land conservation on the national and regional level.

Specific Responsibilities

• • Track and generate weekly reports of respondents to date, including breakdowns by state, region and priority groups
  • Assist land trusts in accessing and navigating the web survey
  • Field questions from land trusts by phone and email
  • Follow up with survey respondents for additional information and clarification as needed
  • Data entry as needed to maintain current records
  • Work in partnership with Alliance field staff, state land trust associations and other partners to publicize the Census

Qualifications

• • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Excel, including writing formulas and creating PivotTables.
  • The ability to self-motivate and work independently is essential.
  • Experience with data analysis, website support, Salesforce and/or FormAssembly is a plus.
  • Familiarity with land conservation, including knowledge of land trusts, is helpful.

Compensation

The budgeted salary range for this position is $20 per hour with up to 30 hours per week.
