About NAMI Charlotte
NAMI Charlotte is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions through support, education, and advocacy. As the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we provide free peer-led support groups, educational programs, community outreach, and stigma-reduction initiatives across the Charlotte community. Our work focuses on increasing awareness, promoting early intervention, and ensuring individuals have access to resources and a supportive network.

The Project
The Photography & Videography Storytelling Intern will support the development of NAMI Charlotte’s #IamNAMICLT campaign, a storytelling initiative designed to elevate authentic voices and experiences related to mental health. The student will collaborate with staff to plan, capture, and produce visual content including short-form videos, interviews, and portraits of individuals who have engaged with NAMI Charlotte’s programs. Responsibilities will include assisting with shoot planning, conducting on-site or virtual recordings, editing video content, and organizing digital media assets. The scope of the project includes: *Capturing high-quality photo and video content for campaign use *Conducting or assisting with recorded interviews focused on lived experiences *Editing short-form videos for social media and web use *Supporting content organization and file management *Ensuring storytelling aligns with NAMI’s messaging, branding, and confidentiality standards This project may involve a mix of on-site filming at events or offices and remote editing work.

Learning Experience
The student will gain hands-on, real-world experience in visual storytelling, content creation, and nonprofit communications. They will develop technical skills in photography, videography, lighting, sound, and editing, while also learning how to translate sensitive, real-life experiences into compelling and ethical narratives. Additionally, the student will: *Build a professional portfolio with published work tied to a community campaign *Gain experience interviewing and working with diverse populations *Learn best practices for storytelling in the mental health and nonprofit space *Strengthen communication, project management, and creative direction skills *Understand how visual media supports advocacy, fundraising, and community engagement

Outcomes
*5–8 edited short-form videos (30–90 seconds) highlighting individual stories for the #IamNAMICLTh campaign *A curated library of high-quality photos for use across social media, website, and marketing materials *1–2 longer-form video pieces (2–3 minutes) showcasing deeper storytelling narratives *Organized digital asset library with labeled and categorized media files *Content ready for scheduled release across NAMI Charlotte’s communication channels These deliverables will contribute directly to increasing community awareness, reducing stigma around mental health, and amplifying the voices of those impacted.
