ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES The Intern for the Utility Maintenance Division works under the direction of the Collections Supervisor, assists with some of the daily operations, and performs tasks in the general maintenance of the Collection System including: weekly inspection of all sewer lift stations to include visual inspection of control panels, wet wells, and floats contained within; observing pump run times and logging data and noting any issues found at each station; monthly testing of all High-Water Alarms to be conducted which involves exposure to open wet wells with assistance. Inspections will be self-conducted on all above ground stations and all below ground stations with assistance.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS Knowledge of safe operation and appropriate usage of equipment Knowledge of operational characteristics of general maintenance and construction equipment and tools used in work activities Knowledge of basic map reading Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, tablets, and mobile devices Knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping and reporting Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices and safe driving principles and practices Skill in safe driving of a vehicle Skill in interpreting and applying policies, procedures, laws, and regulations pertaining to work functions Skill in following a prescribed route and schedule Skill in responding to requests and inquiries from the public Skill in working independently in the absence of supervision Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Ability to represent the County in a professional and respectful manner while interacting with a diverse set of individuals within the workplace and the community Ability to respond quickly, appropriately, and calmly to emergency and non-routine situations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS High School Diploma or equivalent from an appropriately accredited institution

LICENSE AND CERTIFATION REQUIREMENTS Must possess and maintain a valid Class C North Carolina Drivers License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS ***This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug screenings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This is medium to heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
