Job Description

Atkins Library’s manuscript collections are an integral component of Special Collections’ efforts to preserve and share the history and culture of UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte region. The department constantly strives to reveal hidden collections and make all of our holdings available to researchers.

Under direction of the Archivist for Collections Management, the Collections Management Intern (UPIP) will work to provide basic description to incoming and legacy archival collections as well. The UPIP student will potentially assist with assorted collections maintenance tasks, including the assessment of preservation concerns, as well as rehousing the materials into archivally sound storage environments to ensure the long term stability of the materials. The UPIP student may also participate in efforts to prepare materials for digitization. 

Collection management tasks that will receive priority include:

  • Conduct activities to enable the responsible management and discovery of manuscript collections, which may include the creation of detailed inventories and labels
  • Identify materials in need of preservation and administer in-house treatments, including reboxing
  • Identify and prepare high-use materials for digitization based on condition, wear and tear; may conduct digitization activities
  • Assist with reference photocopying/scanning requests
