Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the development of new processes, products and equipment using coating, stranding and extrusion techniques. The candidate is expected to apply their education and experience to support new equipment and process development activities. Specific knowledge of fiber optic cable processes and/or polymeric materials is not required.

Day to DayResponsibilities

  • Participate collaboratively in project teams to develop new equipment and processes.

  • Conduct research, propose experiments, and analyze data to test hypotheses and enhance understanding of equipment & processes.

  • Provide Corning with inventive solutions toward new development efforts.

  • Identify and investigate new processing techniques to develop innovative cable designs.

  • Collaborate with research and manufacturing functions throughout product development cycle.

  • Communicate and document results in technical reports and presentations.

Education and Requirements

Education:

Enrolled in accredited Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering or equivalent degree

Requirements:

  • Individual must be capable of executing project assignments in a team-based environment.

  • Strong problem solver utilizing structured techniques.

  • Demonstrated, applied mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to share and clearly express technical ideas.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to communicate effectively within a global work environment with solid written and verbal skills, with experience with Microsoft Office tools.

  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later

  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.

Desired Skills

  • Computer aided design for mechanical drawings

  • Continuous process design and development experience

  • Experience in polymer extrusion

  • Capable of performing complex data analysis using MS excel (SPC), or statistical software such as JMP or Minitab

  • Artificial intelligence human assisted design and/or demonstrated use of simulation software in the development of new processes or other process modeling abilities

?The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
