About the Internship

Join one of the most innovative engineering design teams with multiple specialties within the transportation sector. The Port Authority's airports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, bus terminal and rail transportation systems are important transportation links in the region. The Civil Engineering Unit within the Engineering/Architecture Design Division serves a unique role with the Port Authority by providing engineering planning and design services throughout the agency with close coordination with external stakeholders including Federal, State and local transportation and regulatory agencies. Areas of design include runways, taxiways, roadways, pavements, utilities, storm water, site civil, freight and passenger rail.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare drawings in AutoCad Civil 3D

  • Assist with Construction Cost Estimates

  • Perform routine site design for storm drainage, utilities, paving, grading or rail

  • Assist with contract document preparation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship

  • Major in Civil Engineering or related discipline

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in a career of site civil or transportation design

  • Basic understanding of AutoCad

  • Some relevant civil engineering coursework completed

  • Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Interest in public service and/or transportation

  • Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region

  • Willingness to learn

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026

  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026

  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)

  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
