Job Description

PROJECT SUMMARY

Since 2014, HOPE Crew (which stands for Hands-On Preservation Experience) has helped to empower a new generation of preservationists by completing 175 projects, training more than 802 young people—including veterans—and engaging over 3,750 volunteers in historic preservation trades. The intern will aid HOPE Crew in collecting content, data, and metrics on HOPE Crew projects and participants for the program’s 10th Anniversary. They will also work with our HOPE Crew Manager to create an effective tracking system to keep in touch with past and future participants. In addition to outreach to past program partners, the intern will use creative data collection methods such as surveys and social media posts and polls to explore how HOPE Crew has impacted past participants’ studies, hobbies, and careers.

The intern will explore storytelling through interviewing past participants, drafting social media posts, and developing short articles for savingplaces.org and other National Trust channels. Other duties may include assisting the HOPE Crew team with scheduling and project coordination (e.g. transportation scheduling, catering orders, itinerary creation, etc.)

National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.

For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $4,000 to help offset expenses. The internship period would be June 10 – August 2. 2024 for approximately 28 hours per week (some flexibility of schedule available).

DUTIES

  • Create a tracking system for past and present HOPE Crew participants.
  • Compose one or more articles for savingplaces.org
  • Reach out to past participant and partner organizations
  • Conduct interviews with diverse members of the preservation movement who have participated in past HOPE Crews
  • Create surveys, with incentives to drive participation and response rates
  • Collect content for social media posts, work with the National Trust media department to pass along content and create schedules for publication, and periodically interaction with HOPE Crew social media followers
  • Conduct occasional field visits to gather content as possible

EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN

The intern will gain experience under the mentorship of respected preservation professionals, in an educational setting at one of the nation’s leading arts & cultural and non-profit advocacy organizations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.

Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:

  • Participant tracking, program benefit analytics
  • Writing for a non-profit organization’s website
  • Storytelling for program development and growth
  • Outreach and relationship building with stakeholders and students.
  • Social media engagement for non-profits
  • Observation of historic preservation on site visits
  • Engagement with community on social media

At the end of the project the intern will have improved the tracking mechanism of the HOPE Crew program, shared stories highlighting the program’s benefit, boosted the program’s online presence, and encouraged growth of the HOPE Crew online community. The intern will have gathered and shared stories of the places, participants, and partners on a HOPE Crew project. This experience can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient use of social media platforms.
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions required. Able to handle frequently changing and/or unscheduled tasks with accuracy.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English. Bi-lingual language skills a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word and Excel. Experience engaging with followers on Instagram.
  • Aptitude for data collection and associated software/programs such as Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, and Instagram polls.
  • The ability to work effectively in a remote environment, maintaining productivity and communications to meet deadlines and goals, is required.
  • Bachelor’s level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in related subject matter preferred, including political science, humanities, public history, social media marketing, and/or photography/videography.
