Start Time & Duration: 1 June 2026/ASAP to 30 Sep2026 (flexible start + end dates)

We are seeking a Research Intern who is currently pursuing a PhD or MSc and is interested in evaluating open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) for cybersecurity and software engineering tasks. The intern will support ongoing research and build a test setup to quickly assess open-source models, understand their ability to identify vulnerabilities, and validate vendor claims. A key focus of this role is to improve Siemens' representation in benchmark datasets used to evaluate frontier models. The intern will identify Siemens-relevant open-source code with known CVEs and prepare these projects for inclusion in benchmarking environments. This work will help ensure future LLMs are trained and evaluated on scenarios more relevant to Siemens use cases.

This internship is offered as an on-site internship in our office in Princeton, NJ, USA. It is not offered as a remote position. Siemens benefits for interns include, beyond a competitive salary, relocation and housing allowances, among others (subject to eligibility).

The challenges and responsibilities

  • Supportexisting research activities related to evaluating open-source LLMs forcybersecurity and software engineering tasks.

  • IdentifySiemens-relevant open-source codebases that contain known CVEs and aresuitable for benchmark development.

  • Prepareselected projects for inclusion in cybersecurity benchmarkingenvironments, including setting up test images, formatting source code,and organizing patches.

  • Contributebenchmark-ready assets that can be incorporated into platforms such ascybersecurity and software engineering evaluation suites.

  • Helpensure that future model evaluations better reflect Siemens-relevant codeand practical industrial use cases.

  • Documentfindings, experimental setup, and results clearly for internal use andfuture research activities.

  • Presentstatus reports and results in internal reviews and contribute topublications.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience.

  • Currentlyenrolled full-time as MSc or PhD candidate in Cybersecurity, ComputerScience, Software Engineering, or a related field. PhD is preferred.

  • Strongunderstanding of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs),vulnerability management workflows, and software security testing.

  • Experienceanalyzing, reproducing, and validating vulnerabilities in open-sourcesoftware projects.

  • Proficiencyin programming languages such as Python, C/C++, Java, or JavaScript, withthe ability to work across diverse codebases.

  • Experiencewith Linux environments, shell scripting, Git, Docker, and virtualized orcontainerized test setups.

  • Familiaritywith software build systems, package managers, and CI/CD workflows used tobuild and test applications.

  • Experienceusing security and dependency analysis tools such as CVE databases, NVD,GitHub Security Advisories, Snyk, OSV, or similar resources.

  • Proficiencyin English both written and verbal

  • Legallyauthorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship forthe duration of the internship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Stronganalytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.

  • Experiencewith open-source LLM tooling or evaluation frameworks

  • Familiaritywith benchmarking, test harnesses, and frameworks for software engineeringor cybersecurity evaluation is a plus.
