About NAMI Charlotte
NAMI Charlotte is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions through support, education, and advocacy. As the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we provide free peer-led support groups, educational programs, and community outreach throughout Mecklenburg County. Our work focuses on increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and connecting individuals to critical mental health resources through our community resource center and outreach initiatives.

The Internship
The Community Resource & Outreach Intern will support NAMI Charlotte’s day-to-day operations within our open-to-the-community resource center while also assisting with outreach events, awareness campaigns, and fundraising support projects. Key responsibilities include: *Greeting and assisting walk-in visitors at the resource center, helping connect individuals and families to appropriate mental health resources and services *Providing general program information and maintaining a welcoming, supportive environment *Assisting with outreach events, including setup, engagement, and distribution of educational materials *Supporting community awareness campaigns through content coordination, light administrative tasks, and event participation *Assisting with miscellaneous projects that support fundraising efforts, such as event preparation, donor engagement materials, and campaign logistics *Helping maintain organization of resource materials and tracking basic engagement data This role offers a mix of direct community interaction, program support, and behind-the-scenes operational experience.

Learning Experience
The student will gain hands-on experience in community-based nonprofit work, with direct exposure to mental health advocacy, resource navigation, and public engagement. They will develop strong interpersonal and communication skills through interactions with diverse populations seeking support. Additionally, the student will: *Learn how to assess needs and connect individuals to appropriate community resources *Gain experience in outreach, event coordination, and public-facing engagement *Build skills in nonprofit operations, including program support and fundraising logistics *Develop professionalism, empathy, and ethical awareness when working with sensitive populations *Strengthen organizational, problem-solving, and teamwork skills in a mission-driven environment This experience is especially valuable for students interested in social work, public health, psychology, nonprofit management, or communications.

Outcomes
*Successful support of daily operations within the resource center, including assisting walk-in visitors and maintaining organized resource materials *Participation in and support of multiple outreach events and community engagement opportunities *Contribution to at least one awareness or outreach campaign through coordination or implementation support *Assistance with fundraising-related projects, including event preparation or donor engagement support *Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with community members and work collaboratively with staff *Completion of internship hours with increased confidence in professional, client-facing, and nonprofit work environments Internship SECU Summer Internship Program
