About the Internship

The Quality Assurance Division is looking for an intern to join the Structural Integrity Group! The Structural Integrity Unit performs cyclical Condition Surveys to report on the condition of all bridges, buildings, tunnels, piers & wharfs and all other Agency structures and provides repair recommendations. In addition, the unit performs inspections of conditions requiring immediate action at all of the Agency's facilities and determines the necessary course of action. The unit also manages Immediate Repairs Contracts and authorizes the use of the Immediate Repairs Contractor to complete structural or operationally sensitive repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the reviews of condition survey reports and biennial bridge inspection reports

  • Update the inventory database for condition survey reports and immediate actions

  • Assist with audits of consultants performing facility condition surveys and biennial inspection of bridges

  • Assist in responding to and evaluating immediate structural deficiencies at all Port Authority facilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship

  • Major in Engineering (Civil, Structural, or related discipline)

Desired Qualifications

  • Rising senior or graduate-level student

  • One year of civil/structural engineering internship experience.

  • Proficiency and effectiveness in written and oral communication skills are essential.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.

  • Self-motivated and experienced in working in a team environment.

  • Proficient in the use of various computer programs such as Microsoft Office, AUTOCAD, etc.

  • Ability to climb various types of structures.

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026

  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026

  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)

  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
