Job Description
- Provide housekeeping and building services for our residential students, visiting faculty, guests, and conference participants with the safest and cleanest environment possible. Utilize and properly maintain cleaning equipment, based on standard operating procedures, to departmental specifications. The housekeeping position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and assisting in the maintenance of buildings which complements the impact of student development goals of the department.
- Performs basic cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, dusting, waste removal, restocking restrooms, disinfecting/sanitizing, etc., to keep work areas in a clean and orderly condition. Operates and maintains basic equipment in the performance of housekeeping duties to include motor scrubber, vacuum cleaner, backpack carpet extractor/ cleaner, industrial vacuums, floor buffers, water extractors, carpet steam cleaners, electrostatic sprayers, etc. Cleans and sanitizes on a daily basis to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
- Cleans spaces of currently ill and recently ill students, to prevent the further spread of illness. Clean all fixtures, showers, floors, exterior of dispensers’ door push and kick plates, restroom receptacles, partitions and rails. Monitors stairwells, entrance areas and common areas for cleanliness. Dust mops and damp mops as needed. Vacuum carpets in common areas and entrance mats as needed. Regularly checks for and cleans wall spots. Performs high and low dusting. Cleans hallway trash and recyclables receptacles. Recognizes and follows dispenser directions to properly mix cleaning chemicals. Maintains an inventory of cleaning materials, supplies and equipment to ensure appropriate levels needed to perform work. Responsible for cleaning assigned areas, public restrooms, public areas, trash rooms/areas (dumpsters/carts, trash room, housekeeping trash closet), and offices. Responds on an as-needed basis on weekends and nights to emergency situations in the buildings, including but not limited to natural disasters, disease containment, equipment failure, adverse weather. Understands and complies with University Safety, State, and OSHA requirements including those related to bloodborne pathogens. Follows appropriate hazard protocols when in contact with bodily fluids such as blood, feces, vomit, and urine. Fit tested for N95 masks on an as-needed basis. Practices appropriate physical and safety techniques; use proper safety gear and equipment. Takes action to correct hazards. Takes active role in promoting and talking about health and safety issues.
- Reads safety manuals. Ensures equipment is properly maintained. Attends training and receives proper information pertaining to equipment, safety and/or emergency procedures, and accident reporting. Understands appropriate action to correct hazards. Reports and responds to accidents appropriately and in a timely manner. Is alert to potentially dangerous situations or conditions; report to supervisor when something needs further attention. Reports any conditions which need maintenance attention. Ensures proper mixing and/or diluting of chemicals according to original labels. Ensures chemicals are labeled and environmentally safe. Ensures safe storage of chemicals. Reports outdated or improperly stored chemicals.
- Respectfully identifies, listens, and responds to customer needs in assigned work areas. Works in areas with students on a daily basis. Remains respectful of students’ privacy and belongings. Develops strong relations with residents to minimize damage and increase students’ respect for the residence hall environment. Builds and sustains productive customer relationships. Provides courteous and patient service to allow residents to be content in living areas. Makes customers and their needs a primary focus of one’s actions. Demonstrates ability to adapt schedules to customers’ needs.
