Job Description

About the Role

The Development Intern is a valued member of the Budget Center’s growing team that supports the advancement of our strategic and tactical development efforts across institutional and individual giving. The Development Intern will be a member of a development team of 2-3 staff and will be responsible for conducting institutional and individual development research, updating the team’s CRM (Salesforce), supporting with the year-end appeal (YEA) fundraising campaign, providing assistance with grant reports/proposals, and helping with components of the 30th anniversary campaign planning. 

The Development Intern reports to the Director of Development.

Duties and Responsibilities 

Data and CRM Management:

  • Confidentially, update donor/funder data in the Budget Center’s CRM, Salesforce.
  • Conduct regular audits of Salesforce’s current and ideal state use.
  • Build and maintain Salesforce campaigns, reports, and dashboards.
  • Assist in the standardization of a Salesforce usage manual with best practices.

Donor and Funder Research:

  • Research prospective donors and funders using tools like iWave.
  • Explore fundraising research tools and build a regular practice of prospective research.
  • Support in the engagement of past and potential new donors and funders.

Year-End Appeal Campaign:

  • Support the development team with our annual year-end appeal (YEA) campaign, including through donor list building, appeal drafting, and overall campaign engagement.
  • During the YEA campaign, support with funder reports, as needed.

Organizational Activities:

  • Contribute to the Budget Center’s equity work.
  • Potential to assist with development of the Budget Center’s annual policy conference, Policy Insights.
  • Support the development team with the initial stages of a 30th anniversary campaign.

Professional Development:

  • Learn about California state policy and budget processes.
  • Gain insights into the history and structure of nonprofits and fundraising (development and philanthropy) as a whole.
  • Explore the Budget Center’s main issue areas.
  • Engage with staff on career development.

  • Strong commitment to social, economic, and racial equity, preferably with some experience embodying these values in equity-centered research, CRM management, and relationship management.
  • Dedicated to the goals and mission of the Budget Center, with a strong interest in conducting data hygiene, maintaining donor/funder records, and advancing a nonprofit’s mission through development. Interest in public policy and nonprofit development preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (both written and verbal communication) complex information and concepts in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences.
  • Self-motivation, ability to work independently, and ability to prioritize tasks, including ability to hold multiple projects at once and coordinate tasks and track progress.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and successfully coordinate with others to advance tasks.
  • Facility with numbers, including the use of spreadsheets, and attention to detail. Experience with CRMs, like Salesforce preferred. 
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products and the Google Suite. Strong data skills and the ability to learn quickly are preferred. 
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of donors, contributions, programs, and department procedures.
  • High school diploma is required. A Bachelor’s degree or prior experience with funder research, CRMs, and fundraising is helpful, but not required.

Physical and Location Requirements

The Budget Center strives to work with each staff member to provide flexible schedules and accommodate personal obligations in pursuit of creating and maintaining a strong work-life balance and well-being. We provide telework/remote work, in-person/in-office, and hybrid work arrangements. 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer and using a computer and mouse.
  • Occasional travel is required (work travel is fully reimbursable).
  • This role is primarily remote, but candidates should be based in a location allowing for occasional in-person attendance at our Sacramento office. While we don't specify a strict distance requirement, it's important that candidates can comfortably travel to the office for initial weekly visits for onboarding and at least twice a month as they settle into the role. 

Compensation and Benefits

This is a temporary hourly non-exempt position with an hourly salary of $23 - $26 per hour, and with an option to work part-time or full-time through December 2024. The salary will be determined by considering various factors, including skills, relevant experience, and educational background. Alongside these factors, we are committed to maintaining pay equity and will consider the internal equity among our existing team in formulating any final offer. It’s important to note that the specified range represents the complete salary band for this position. Typically, offers are not made at the top half of the range to allow for potential future salary growth.
