Job Description

The School Mental Health Graduate Internship Program is designed to develop a highly qualified workforce to support the expansion of school-based mental health services throughout the Carolinas. Graduate students in counseling, social work, psychology, and related disciplines complete a 600-hour internship within school settings, which includes 30 hours of professional development facilitated by the USC School Behavioral Health Team (SBHT). 

Through this program, interns gain an in-depth understanding of how school mental health professionals integrate into and contribute to school culture and systems. Interns complete a minimum of 150 hours of direct clinical experience in schools, including observation and the progressive provision of individual, family, and group therapy services. In addition, interns receive training in clinical assessment and crisis intervention. While primarily placed in school settings, interns actively participate in interdisciplinary teams to support comprehensive student care. 

 

Graduate students enrolled in the internship will:

  • Complete 600 total internship hours in South Carolina schools. Interns will become familiar with school district policies and procedures and learn how school mental health professionals become part of schools’ cultures.
  • Obtain at least 150 hours of clinical experience in schools, including observing and progressively delivering individual, family, and group therapy. Interns will also be trained in clinical assessments and crisis intervention services. While primarily working in school settings, interns will participate in the interdisciplinary teams.
  • Complete 30 hours of professional development regarding school mental health over the course of the program.
