About the Internship
The Major Capital Projects (MCP) Department is seeking a Summer Intern to support its Construction team This internship offers hands-on exposure to the construction management activities that drive the delivery of some of the region's most complex transportation infrastructure projects. Interns will work alongside experienced Port Authority construction professionals, gaining experience in field inspections, project coordination, contract interpretation, and monitoring construction progress. This role is at the core of MCP's mission to build major transportation assets safely, on schedule, and within budget, offering valuable experience for students interested in construction management, engineering, public service, or infrastructure development.
Responsibilities

Support hands-on construction management activities for major capital projects valued up to $4B, including the replacement of the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the Hudson River Tunnel core and shell contracts

Participate in on-site inspections and fieldwork to monitor day-to-day construction progress and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety standards.

Assist in tracking and evaluating project schedules and budgets, identifying potential risks, delays, and cost impacts

Review contract drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents to support project oversight and resolve field issues.

Contribute to the preparation of cost estimates and documentation required for contract modifications and change orders.

Collaborate with engineers, construction managers, consultants, and contractors to support successful project delivery.

Gain exposure to the design, construction, and management practices of a major public transportation and infrastructure agency.

Provide general project support, including preparing reports, organizing documentation, and participating in project meetings as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
-
Major in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or related discipline
Desired Qualifications
-
Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region

Interest in public service and/or transportation
Internship Details

The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026

The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026

This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)

In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
