Job Description

The EPIC Technical Services RU is seeking up to five motivated undergraduate students to provide technical support for high-level energy projects involving Duke Energy and Siemens Energy and other industry partners. Under the direction of EPIC personnel, assistants will provide technical services including system fabrication, programming, test bed setup, and hardware maintenance.  These roles focus on technical service delivery rather than independent research.

Available Technical Tracks

Please indicate your interest or qualification for specific tracks in your application:

  • Track 1: Embedded Systems
    • Focus: Technical support for embedded control systems.
    • Skills: Proficiency in C/Python and experience with microcontrollers.
  • Track 2: Embedded Systems & Programming
    • Focus: Programming and firmware support (Replacing May graduate).
    • Skills: Ability to write/debug code in C/Python and navigate Linux/Microsoft environments.
  • Track 3: Electromechanical Design & Prototyping
    • Focus: Hardware prototyping and CAD modeling for the motor lab (Replacing May graduate).
    • Skills: Interest in electromechanical systems and 3D modeling (CAD).
  • Track 4: Laboratory Operations & Motor Testing
    • Focus: Test bed setup, motor testing, and instrumentation (Replacing May graduate).
    • Skills: Hands-on mechanical aptitude and experience with laboratory measurement instruments.
  • Track 5: Power Systems
    • Focus: Technical service support for specialized grounding infrastructure studies.
    • Skills: Coursework or strong interest in Power Systems.

Core Responsibilities

  • Fabrication & Assembly: Usage of prototyping and testing circuits, PCB design/fabrication, soldering, and assembly of test systems including wiring.
  • System Testing Services: Measurement of voltage and current, timing of control outputs using oscilloscopes, and measurement of motor speed and torque using laboratory instruments.
  • Programming: Plan, write, and debug code in C and Python (AI-assisted coding is not permitted).
  • Laboratory Upkeep: General upkeep and organization of the laboratory space utilized for technical projects.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or related).
  • Ability to follow technical specifications and safety protocols.
  • Work is strictly Technical Service based; design work will depend on current education level and knowledge.
