The Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists (CAABJ) is an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), a nonprofit organization focused on establishing strong ties among African Americans working in the media and expanding and balancing the media's coverage of the African American community and experience since 1975. CAABJ is also committed to community outreach efforts.
On April 10-12, 2025, our Region III Conference is scheduled at Johnson C. Smith University. (in-person) Two hundred participants including professional journalists, students, educators, dignitaries and other professionals are expected. (Region III covers eleven states). Our needs include planning, writing correspondence for participants, session descriptions and other material, managing registration, securing presenters,
managing logistics and coordinating the event.
We prefer an aspiring journalist or a student interested in a related field to work about 5-6 weekly hours for a 5-6 week period. The student placed with CAABJ will participate in meetings with professional journalists, will have the ability to engage in conversations about the profession, will learn about the professional organizations to consider how they might impact his/her career and will gain oral/written communication experience.
Expected outcomes: mentor an aspiring journalist, develop oral/written communication skills, provide lived experience and secure an additional member for our conference team.
