Job Description
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Environmental Specialist is responsible for assisting the department in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, supporting sustainability initiatives, and promoting a safe and healthy workplace within our manufacturing and distribution facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assists in monitoring and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including air quality, water quality, waste management, and hazardous materials handling.
- Monitors air pollution and water pollution abatement systems to assure compliance, including engineering evaluation and support to plant engineering and maintenance staff; performs required monitoring and record keeping as required per environmental permits
- Ensures all locations are compliant with RCRA rules and regulations to include site coordination of waste generation points, storage locations, site training, and shipments
- Works with outside vendors, contractors, and consultants as appropriate
- Assists with hazardous material compliance activities, training programs, regulatory agency inspections, and with recycling efforts at all facilities
- Conducts regular inspections and environmental monitoring activities, including sampling and analysis of air, water, and soil.
- Maintains accurate records of environmental data, permits, and compliance reports. Assists in the preparation and submission of required environmental reports to regulatory agencies.
- Supports the development and implementation of sustainability programs aimed at reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing operations.
- Assists in developing and delivering environmental training programs for employees to promote awareness and compliance with environmental policies and procedures.
- Participates in investigations and responses to environmental incidents, spills, and releases. Assists in developing corrective actions and preventive measures.
- Identifies opportunities for process improvements and recommend solutions to enhance environmental performance and sustainability.

- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Natural or Physical Sciences or other curriculum relevant to EHS fields.
- 0-2 years of experience in environmental compliance, sustainability, or a related field (internships or co-op experience preferred).
- Basic understanding of federal, state, and local EHS regulations and standards.
- Must have the ability to learn and understand sampling/analytical techniques used assuring compliance of various regulatory activities including obtaining wastewater samples, utilization of pH meter, LEL & PID maintenance, visual observations for stormwater and spill prevention
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring techniques and equipment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SharePoint, Visio, and Learning Management Systems.
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Valid NC Driver’s License and ability to obtain forklift training and licensure
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Must be able to maneuver (lean, roll, push) up to 85-gallon waste drums around on pallets – drum weight can be up to 400 pounds
- Must be able to lift full boxes of used light bulbs, from floor to waist level, to load and unload such boxes; may require lifting boxes from overhead positions to waist level to load and unload such boxes
- Must be able to lift empty metal drums and carry such drums for short distances – approximate drum weight is 50-75 pounds; involves lifting from waist or floor to shoulder level, or above
- Spill prevention support activities require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds from the floor to shoulder level and to carry for short distances
- Wastewater and stormwater activities require the ability to carry coolers filled with ice and filled sample containers – approximate weight is 50 pounds
- Must be able to walk and/or stand for long periods of time
- Computer and Monitor usage for extended periods of time
- Extended periods in Industrial environment
- Moderate lifting
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work often occurs in a Distribution Center or Manufacturing Plant environment that with and without climate-controlled temperatures. Many duties listed above are time-sensitive and have strict deadlines for completion that are unique to these environments.
- Climate controlled office environment
- Manufacturing facilities including operations and maintenance areas with potential exposure to various environmental conditions (e.g., noise, dust, chemicals).
- Distribution centers
- Outside areas adjacent to facilities
- Work outdoors is required
- Wears proper PPE in the manufacturing area (shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection)
