UTOP

The University Transition Opportunities Program (UTOP) began in 1986 to facilitate the underrepresented student's transition from high school to college. By involving incoming UNC Charlotte freshmen in a rigorous six-week summer collegiate experience, UTOP builds upon the scholastic abilities of the students through college courses and contact with University academic support services.

How UTOP Works?

  • Participants enroll in classes together for a total of 7 credit hours;
  • Participants reside in the same residence hall;
  • Participants develop study skills and college survival tools;
  • Participants engage in weekend extra-curricular activities;
  • Participants receive academic advising and monitoring throughout the students’ freshmen year.

What is a UTOP mentor?

UTOP mentors are expected to uphold the UTOP culture while remembering to exhibit all of the aspects of a student peer mentor. A mentor takes the initiative in any situation and places value on the integrity of the program. The program demands each mentor connect with students by helping to find an adequate balance in personal relationships, building social skills, and developing positive academic habits. Consequently, the primary mission of the program is fulfilled in easing the transition of incoming freshmen and maturing them so they are prepared for semesters to follow with campus resources, UTOP staff and a strong bond from their peers and mentors.

UTOP Mentor Role:

  • Provide personal assistance to participants
  • Assist in the development of skills necessary for participants to succeed in college
  • Motivate participants to achieve academic excellence
  • Enhance the academic confidence of participants
  • Serve as a resource and referral person for participants
  • Provide support, encouragement, and positive perspectives
