Job Description
Summary of Position and Responsibilities:
The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Graduate Assistant will serve as a member of the larger team within the Center for Wellness Promotion. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for the creation, implementation, and assessment of mental health and suicide prevention programming for students.
The following responsibilities will be critical to this role:
- Create, implement, and assess evidence-based educational programming on mental health that has a high likelihood of achieving measurable improvements in health behaviors and/or student success.
- Provide workshops for students on mental health topics, including stress, burnout, and how to support a fellow Niner who is struggling; oversee the data collection, assessment, and evaluation of this program series.
- Work collaboratively with CWP staff to ensure the success of key initiatives, such as Suicide Prevention Week, World Mental Health Day, Out of the Darkness Walk and Campus Screening Day, etc; oversee data collection and analysis to evaluate these initiatives.
- Support programs and initiatives that enact the vision of a campus that values the mental health of all community members and strives to create a culture of wellbeing (i.e. QPR, JED Campus and H.E.L.P. Certificate)
- Support peer educators through direct supervision, training, and mentoring of peer educators and undergraduate student employees.
- Work nights and weekends, as needed (i.e. Out of the Darkness Walk, Mental Wellness Workshops).
Expectations:
- Interest and enthusiasm for mental health and suicide prevention, college health promotion, and wellness education.
- Familiarity with campus wellbeing departments (e.g., CAPS, Student Health, UREC), and other resources on and off campus.
- Demonstrates strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; able to manage multiple projects at the same time effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Works well independently and as part of a team; shows initiative, creativity, and flexibility in adapting to departmental needs.
- Assist with departmental initiatives, outside of the Mental Health Education and Suicide Prevention program area, when needed.
- Appropriately handles confidential student information and feels comfortable working on and discussing sensitive topics, such as mental health challenges, suicide, and interpersonal violence.
- Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills with a growth mindset and openness to give and receive constructive feedback.
- Fulfill the duties outlined in the position job description, and meet reasonable verbal and written expectations given by the supervisors.
- Willingness to develop and follow a consistent work schedule in collaboration with supervisor; adhere to guidelines for time-off requests and work responsibilities.
- Refrain from working on other responsibilities (homework, personal email, other jobs you may have) during your work hours.
20 hour/week GA for 34 weeks. This position is NOT a hybrid position, and the applicant chosen should be able to commit to a minimum of 3 days in-office.
