STW: Electrical Engineer

Position Summary

We are seeking an undergraduate student in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology to assist with field surveys and documentation of building electrical systems. This position provides an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience with electrical distribution systems, equipment documentation, facility data, and electrical drawings.

The student will work alongside the campus Electrical Engineer to collect and verify field information and assist with maintaining accurate electrical system records. Prior experience with building electrical systems or AutoCAD is not required but preferred.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with field surveys of building electrical systems and equipment.
• Assist with reviewing and verifying electrical equipment data maintained in ARCHIBUS for accuracy and completeness.
• Compare existing building electrical riser diagrams with field conditions and identify discrepancies.
• Assist with verifying and updating existing building electrical riser diagrams.
• Assist with creating electrical riser diagrams for buildings where accurate drawings are not currently available.
• Collect equipment information, including nameplate data and other relevant field information.
• Take clear, well-organized photographs of electrical equipment and installations.
• Take detailed and accurate field notes to document equipment, system configurations, and observed conditions.
• Assist with organizing and maintaining electrical system documentation and survey information.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile

Education

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a closely related Engineering Technology program.
• Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing preferred.

Experience

This is an entry-level position intended to provide practical experience. Candidates may have:

• Little to no prior experience with building electrical systems.
• Little to no prior experience with AutoCAD.
• Limited previous field experience.

Training and guidance will be provided as necessary.

Skills and Qualifications

• Ability to take clear and useful photographs for technical documentation.
• Ability to take accurate, organized, and detailed field notes.
• Good attention to detail and willingness to verify information carefully.
• Basic computer skills and willingness to learn ARCHIBUS, AutoCAD, and other applicable software.
• Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings is preferred but not required.
• Willingness to learn about building electrical distribution systems and equipment.
• Ability to work independently as well as with Facilities and Engineering staff.

Physical and Field Requirements

The position involves regular fieldwork throughout campus buildings. The student must be able to:

• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Frequently travel between buildings and throughout building interiors.
• Go up and down stairs regularly.
• Work in mechanical and electrical rooms and other equipment spaces.
• Work comfortably in tight or confined spaces where building equipment may be located.
• Carry basic field equipment such as a laptop or tablet, camera, drawings, and measuring tools.
