SUMMARY
Assists with the development and application of the regional travel demand model as well as subarea models for high growth and congestion areas. Prepares travel demand forecasts and conducts detailed analyses of transportation demand and performance in a team setting using transportation modeling, air quality modeling, large transportation datasets, and geographic information systems software and databases. Performs computer programming related to travel demand modeling.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Produce and review travel forecasts for highway and transit projects using TransCAD and STOPS software
- Assist with sub-area model development and analysis
- Perform transportation scenario analyses on a wide array of projects including:
- corridor studies
- highway or transit projects
- Analyze connectivity or land use using TransCAD and CommunityViz
- Provide written and verbal technical analyses, reports, and recommendations
- Analyze large transportation datasets from various sources, including probe data, GPS data, and survey data
- Edit macros and computer programs (GISDK, Python, R) for the regional travel demand model
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- TransCAD or similar modeling software
- Micro-simulation software (TransModeler, Vissim, SimTraffic)
- Knowledge of:
- Theory/principles and practices of urban and transportation planning
- Ability to apply transportation models
- Prepare travel demand projections
- Provide technical modeling support
- Assist in the analysis and review of traffic analyses
- Ability to systematically solve problems individually and collaboratively
- Ability to manage time, projects, tasks and maintain schedules
- Communicate complex, technical work to a non-technical audience
Minimum QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of relevant work experience or a Master’s degree with one year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning or a related field.
- Professional Engineer or American Institute of Certified Planners designation is desirable.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
