Job Description
What You Will Do
Do something that matters and make a real difference at one of the world's most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutions. V-6, Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation, provides research, development, and application of state-of-the-art nondestructive
inspections for diverse internal and external programmatic missions. Current group capabilities include x-ray and neutron radiography, computed tomography, ultrasonics, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray spectroscopy, eddy current, dye penetrant, magnetic
particle and x-ray fluorescence, as well as x-ray, ultrasound and eddy current simulation. The staff is comprised of R&D engineers and scientists with backgrounds in physics, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science/programming, as well as engineering technologists and process and sampling technicians.
Interns will be introduced to and taught a wide variety of nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques. Interns will select a project to pursue that best fits their interests and advances the group's capabilities. Potential project topics include, but are not limited to:

Computed tomography automation

Noncontact density evaluation

Radiography acquisition and reconstruction code development

Laser-based high energy radiography system development

X-ray spectroscopy and detector performance

Photoacoustic ultrasonic inspection

Metrology and systems engineering
Post-bachelor's interns should expect a full-time 2-year employment term.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Education/Experience:
-
Must have earned a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (or international equivalent) within the last 3 years.
-
Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
-
This degree must be in a physical science or engineering field, such as but not limited to: Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Computer Science, or Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Nuclear Engineering.
Desired Qualifications:
Candidates selected for this position are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

Computer programming in support of scientific data acquisition or analysis.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of complex systems;
-
Experimental techniques currently used within your selected scientific field(s).

Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safety.

Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and
-
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with customers and collaborators.

Work Schedule:
Onsite/Hybrid: This position is located in Los Alamos, NM with limited potential for a remote work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Interns in this position will work a 9/80 schedule to match their mentor in accordance with the Student Programs Office guidebook (https://int.lanl.gov/employees/education/\_assets/docs/mentor-guidebook.pdf) .

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires
US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
