About International House
International House is committed to helping immigrants and international culture thrive in the Charlotte region. Founded in 1981, its mission is to enrich the lives of foreign-born and foreign-rooted community members by fostering meaningful cross-cultural connections, promoting understanding, and supporting individuals as they settle and succeed in the area. International House's programs include an immigration law clinic, Adult and Youth ESL programs, a community resource center, community engagement opportunities and more.

The Internship
Position Summary: During this summer internship, this student will support the Development Department and the Community Engagement Department. This intern will explore a deep dive into our local nonprofit organization who serves immigrants and international culture by managing communications, marketing, development related events for International House, client greeting and support, among many other tasks. This work will include preparing for an immigrant artist exhibit scheduled for September as well as preparation for International House’s annual fundraiser. Tasks will include organizing planning documents, reaching out to community partners, soliciting donations from local businesses, communicating with the event manager including ideas, feedback and suggestions, engaging with International House community members (students, clients, volunteers, interns, staff) all while working on regular tasks for the development and community engagement teams. Additional tasks may include supporting the donor gratitude process by writing cards to donors and supporting volunteers who are working on similar projects. International House hosts many events and projects, so we ask the intern to be open to new opportunities to learn new skills and information as those arise (because they undoubtedly will). We are committed to working closely with the intern to ensure they are experiencing things that support their schoolwork and future goals as much as possible. While at International House, all students will work in an environment that supports the four core values of Collaboration, Compassion, Excellence, and Integrity. Essential Skills: The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Development duties – 50%: Project Management Support the IH events team to plan for The Journey, a month’s long (September) immigrant artist gallery event and exhibit Support the IH events team to plan for A Celebration of Cultures, International House’s annual fundraiser being held on October 23. Community outreach Organizing timelines and documents Soliciting sponsorships and auction items from community members Gratitude Management Support the Development team in writing thank you cards and sharing the process with IH volunteers. Basic Project Management The Development team manages donor mailings, historical documents projects, handbook updates, the IH storage room management and more. We expect flexibility from an intern to be willing to learn and support current projects as shared from the IH team. Community Engagement duties – 50%: Assist with planning and coordinating workshops, support groups, and community events Help prepare materials and set up spaces for trainings and meetings Support outreach and follow-up communication with participants Track attendance for cultural events and help gather feedback from community members Connect community members to appropriate resources and support services Welcome and assist clients, visitors, and volunteers in a professional and friendly manner Answer phone calls and respond to general inquiries Assist with scheduling and general office organization Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities): Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 including Teams and SharePoint a plus but not required. Word and Excel proficiency Excellent people skills a plus, with an openness to collaborating in a multidisciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team. Willing to learn, support and work alongside International House staff internally and in the community. Multilingual a plus but not required

Learning Experience
Learning about and understanding the fundamentals of a nonprofit organization can change a career. This intern will have the opportunity to learn multiple facets of International House (IH) by understanding how to support the clients, students and full community of IH in many different ways through different communication methods. This person will also learn how the funding basics work as well as supporting event planning. This position is set up to provide a comprehensive overview of a long-standing nonprofit organization who serves immigrants and international culture in Charlotte. It will provide hands-on learning and experience along side International House's long standing staff members.

Outcomes
The expected outcome from International House is to welcome an intern who is integrated into IH's daily work of supporting our community during their internship. We expect this person to engage and interact with our community members in a helpful, kind and encouraging way. They will learn about our programs and many different ways we are able to support community members. We also expect someone who truly wants to learn and understand our organization who is willing to help plan an event, represent IH in a professional way and become a valued member of our community.
