Job Description

The student will participate in the research project led by the supervisor (Dr. Ran Zhang). The project focuses on prototyping an autonomous and distributed multi-drone hardware platform. The platform consists of multiple programmable drones equipped with on-board unit, a powerful battery, 3rd party sensors (e.g., camera) and Wi-Fi communication capabilities. Distributed algorithms will be developed and implemented in the drones to complete various group tasks of interest. The student’s responsibilities include

  • Get familiar with the process of building an autonomous drone from scratch, and be able to reproduce more drones to build a drone swarm
  • Design distributed remote-control-free algorithms to implement in the on-board units of drones to realize coordinated group tasks
  • Investigate the potentials and capabilities of Airsim simulator for visible drone swarm simulations
  • Write technical reports for the projects
  • The position requires advanced knowledge in microcontroller programming, drone assembling, and distributed algorithm design. During the work process, independent judgement on the hardware selections and simulation configurations is needed. ECE students are preferred
