Job Description

COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. It was established by Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. To date, the Museum has collected more than 36,000 artifacts and nearly 100,000 individuals have become members. The Museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, as the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Internships at the National Museum of African American History and Culture offer undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates opportunities to work closely with professionals and scholars in the museum field. The museum provides a dynamic learning environment and access to supportive mentors that help interns reach their academic and professional goals. Interns receive a stipend while they gain practical museum skills and program development experience in a variety of positions! Fall 2024 opportunities include:

 

Center for the Study of Global Slavery Exhibition Development Internship

Center for the Study of Global Slavery Slave Wrecks Project Internship

Sports and Race Initiative Curatorial Internship

Oral History Initiative Internship 

Reclaiming My Time Programming Assistant Internship

Exhibition Design Internship

Interpretive Planning and Historical Research Internship

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will offer available internships as either virtual (online and remote), hybrid (virtual with the opportunity for 1-2 days onsite a week as scheduled), or onsite (entire internship to occur at The National Museum of African American History and Culture or other Smithsonian facilities) experiences.

                                             

QUALIFICATIONS:

Undergraduate students that have completed one year of undergraduate study.

 

Graduate students. 

 

Recent graduates up to two years out of school.

 

Career changers enrolled in a degree program.

 

International students within the continental US.

 

Applicants not participating in a formal education program that can demonstrate how the internship relates to their academic or career goals and provides significant educational benefits.

 

Individuals who have had prior internships or fellowships with The National Museum of African American History and Culture are ineligible and will not be considered.

 

All majors are welcome.

 

Ability to work a minimum of twenty hours per week and attend all scheduled professional development and enrichment events.

 

Interns should possess enthusiasm for African American history and culture; Strong writing and communication skills; Organizational skills; Proficient computer skills; And be motived self-starters.

 

The NMAAHC is accessible via metro and metro bus.
