About the Internship

The Resilience & Sustainable Design (RSD) Unit is responsible for leading the Engineering Department's efforts to incorporate climate resilience and sustainable design into all aspects of the Agency's capital program and related activities, in alignment with the Agency's Environmental Sustainability Policy. Responsibilities include the development, implementation and updating of the Agency's Sustainable and Climate Resilience Design Guidelines to incorporate industry best practices and align with peer agencies throughout the region. In addition, the group develops outreach programs to build internal capacity among engineers, architects, project teams, and line departments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist RSD in implementing Sustainable and Climate Resilience Design Guidelines. Collaborate directly with other units / divisions of the Port Authority Engineering Department as well as the Line Departments and the Office of Sustainability.

  • RSD works with the selected candidate to customize a work program based on the individual's 1) skills and abilities, 2) interests, and 3) the priorities and workload of RSD.

  • For example, duties may be related to applied research; development of design criteria/design review; updates to guidelines, standards, and manuals of practice; creation of communications and/or educational materials; engagement and outreach; and/or related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship

  • Major in Engineering, Architecture, Science, Planning, or related discipline

  • Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.

  • Familiarity with sustainable/climate resilient design

Desired Qualifications

  • Late-stage undergraduate or graduate student preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region

  • Interest in public service and/or transportation.

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026

  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026

  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)

  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $18.07 to $30.31 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
