Job Description

Primary Purpose of the Position

The coordinator for Disability Outreach is responsible for program management and resource development within the Career Center. This is a learning opportunity in which the graduate assistant (GA) can expect to get hands-on experience working with individuals, conducting presentations, and managing programs. 

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities

Program and Event Management (70%)

  • NDEAM and Disability @ Work Series: 
    • Develop and implement the annual “Meet Up Series for NDEAM” (National Disability Employment Awareness Month) in October and “Meet Up Series for Disability @ Work” in the spring. Topics should include but are not limited to: Hidden/Non-visible Disabilities; Networking with a Disability; Neurodivergent Job Search Strategies; and Disclosing a Disability
  • Students Moving Forward Program: 
    • Leads  the marketing, communication, and management of this program specifically developed for our Neurodivergent student population
  • CommunAbility DI-NC Mentoring Program: 
    • Manage program relationship between the Disability:IN NC team, students, and employer mentors
    • Develop messaging and collaborate with the marketing team to distribute marketing to students and employers through email blasts and the partnerships with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) and  the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement (IEE) about using individual mentor and group mentoring sessions
    • Communicate with mentees through email about resources and upcoming events
    • Engage with mentees and ensure their participation in the program through semesterly check-ins
    • Attend monthly CommunAbility Group Mentoring Sessions 
  • Administration for the programs
    • Coordinates with other office staff and departments for marketing, communications, and event logistics
    • Updates website pages and monthly newsletters

Related Projects (10%)

  • Create up-to-date training materials to be used by Career Center staff based on research and present to staff.  
  • Advise marketing and other staff members to make sure materials are accessible.
  • Train staff, faculty, and employers on best practices to serve disabled  populations: Connect with student organizations - meet with student organization leaders and gather information about their interests in employers/organizations; possibly create employer/student org connection opportunities, like panels, guest speakers
  • Collaborate with IEE and ODSs, and other departments on campus
  • Assist with annual events in our office and from other office partners
  • Meet weekly with other GAs and meet monthly with the Assistant Director

Disability Coaching Appointments (10%)

  • Provide disability-focused career coaching services to undergraduate/graduate students and alumni including but not limited to: disclosure and accommodation discussions, major/career exploration, resume/cover letter development, job/internship/co-op search strategies, job shadowing, networking, and interview practice via video chat, in person, phone, and email
  • Document appointment outcomes through Career Center’s system 

Presentations and Drop Ins (10%)

  • Conduct weekly drop-in hours for career coaching topics
  • Interact with students (specifically international students), alumni, faculty, and occasionally employers
  • Represent the Career Center at student organization presentations, which will be assigned as needed
