The Internship
The Metadata Projects UPIP Intern assists with creating, transforming, and editing metadata for digital projects in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) at Atkins Library, surfacing SCUA collections and names data in Wikidata, and creating cataloging records for the library catalog. Tasks include but are not limited to creating and managing authority record data in several different systems; creating and processing metadata for collections in Goldmine, the digital asset management system for Special Collections and University Archives; cataloging print materials; ingesting Wikidata; and performing metadata maintenance activities in Goldmine and in the library catalog.
Learning Experience
Interns will gain experience with metadata analysis, digital projects, digitization and metadata workflows, and various tools and software used to create and edit metadata. The analytical and technical skills gained through the internship could be applicable to a variety of professional positions in data analysis, computer science, the digital humanities, and library and archival science. Previous UPIP interns in the position now hold positions in software engineering and in academic libraries.
Outcomes
The intern will gain data management and analysis skills, experience in writing technical documentation and in working as part of a close-knit team, an understanding of the library and archival data ecosystem in academic institutions, and project management skills.
