Job Description

Purpose/Summary

Work as part of an engineering team by participating in and/or leading key engineering projects and tasks which support the department’s goals and objectives. These projects and tasks could include improvement projects that help create change or growth of the department or support the sustainment of base business. 

Improvement projects and tasks could include:

-          Supporting with the installation and validation of new equipment

-          Identifying, leading, or supporting with projects to improve efficiencies, reduction of waste, maximize safety, or improve quality.

Sustaining base business projects and tasks could include:

-          Investigations into deviations, defects, and customer complaints

-          Resolving issues and delays in production

 

Each Engineering Co-op will be required to lead 1 large project. They will be required to work with the resources provided to research, complete, and present the results to their stakeholders. Project will vary depending on the Co-op’s background and skill set as well as company needs.

 

The intention of the Engineering Co-op position is to collaborate with a student to provide experiences that complement their studies. This experience will hopefully support in creating a graduate that possess both theoretical and practical skills with the possibility of a future career at GBO.

 

Other duties outside of those described above may be assigned to the Engineering Co-Op.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Assist operational engineering teams with process improvement activities or the introduction of new processes, including New Product Introductions (NPI).
  • Assist process qualification activities by drafting qualification documentation, test sample preparation, test execution, data gathering, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Support development and improvement of production, processes, and personnel.
  • Assist in the preparation of manufacturing documentation and specifications.
  • Coordinate the flow of manufacturing qualifications and test samples throughout all stages of manufacturing.
  • Process map and flowchart of the existing and proposed processes. Analysis of improvements to layout, operation, processes, etc.
  • Research and document waste reduction options and propose potential solutions with clear advantages and disadvantages.
  • Investigate potential operational causes of quality issues and research permanent solutions to these issues or potential risks.
  • Implementation of actions to maximize safety.
  • Adhere to all organizational, departmental, and managerial policies and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current college student at a sophomore level or above pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field.
  • Enrolled within a co-op / internship within an approved school program.
  • Required GPA 3.0 or higher.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience or possess the desire to gain experience in a fast-paced manufacturing and engineering environment.
  • Work with minimal supervision both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Willingness to learn “hands-on” about various manufacturing processes and to work in a manufacturing environment including clean rooms and test labs.
  • Must be able to perform quality checks using gauges, micrometers, calipers and other test and measurement equipment.
  • Must be able to read basic engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Demonstrate excellence in technical writing skills, oral communication, and active listening.
  • Demonstrate excellence in attention to detail.
  • Always maintain a safe and clean work environment in accordance with the current OSHA and GMP.
  • Familiarity with injection molding and/or high-speed automation a plus
  • Familiarity with statistical methods a plus.
  • On-time punctuality for shift start, meetings, and major events required.
  • Basic computer writing skills for data entry and report creation related to PWO’s, validations and prototype runs.
  • Intermediate knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, email, and Minitab.
  • Familiarity and basic skills with CAD, CAE, Moldflow, or other engineering software. 
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
