Work Day/Hours: M-F 8:30 - 5:00 assignment will last at least eight weeks between May and August 2024

The City Manager's Office is seeking applications for its competitive Management Internship Program for Summer 2025. The internship will introduce local MPP and MPA graduate students to potential careers in local government management. The selected candidate will work in the City Manager's Office on a variety of special projects and research assignments that directly impact the residents of Durham. The Management Intern will sharpen and apply their skills in conducting literature and best practice reviews, analyzing program data, conducting qualitative research, centering equity in evaluation, and developing and presenting evidence-informed policy recommendations. Through the projects, the intern will gain exposure to the different departments and functions of city government. The intern will also have the opportunity to explore City operations and services through tours, ride-alongs, informational interviews, and attending high-level meetings and events.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conducts a variety of research and assigned projects by compiling and reviewing internal and external organizational information, reviewing historical data, information and reports, and preparing position and issue papers.

  • Gather, clean, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate and draw insights into programs and processes; understand and perform statistical analyses to determine effectiveness of City programs.

  • Prepares and presents reports or formal presentations as appropriate.

  • Ensures equitable considerations are a core part of projects

  • Facilitates and leads interviews, focus groups, and user testing with City staff, leadership, and community members to gather various perspectives.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Must be enrolled in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Public Policy (MPP) program.

  • Available full time for at least eight weeks between May and August 2025.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience and/or formal training in a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods (e.g., basic statistics, surveys, focus groups, interviews, and literature reviews)

  • Project management skills

  • Strong curiosity and ability to ask questions

  • Critical thinking

  • Shared values including racial equity, and public service

  • Takes initiative and is a creative, results-oriented problem solver
