BCOB Niblock Student Center Peer Advisor Program

The Internship
Peer Advisors serve UNC Charlotte as paraprofessionals in the Belk College of Business' Niblock Student Center. Trained Peer Advisors will work with undergraduate Pre-Business, Pre-Accounting, or Pre-Economics students, primarily freshmen & sophomores, and help with academic concerns and on campus resource referrals. Peer Advisors will work with students through various interactions including 1:1 meetings (in person & virtual), group advising (in person & virtual), & email. Specific responsibilities include: Assist students with advising needs such as: creating class schedules, how to get involved on campus, finding academic resources, & explaining academic policies. Serve as a front desk representative, managing student check-ins, providing front-facing support by answering questions, and responding to phone inquiries in a professional and welcoming manner. Facilitate presentations in BUSN 1101/2100 (Prospect for Success) courses, promoting awareness of college services and equipping students with tools for academic and professional development. Advertise the Peer Advising Program to all undergraduate BCOB students through class presentations, tabling, emails, & flyers. Be responsive to students' concerns through emails and follow up in questions cannot be answered in appointments. Refer students to full-time Academic & Career Coach or other appropriate university faculty/staff or resources as needed. Represent the Belk College of Business as a student ambassador at selected university events such as Open House, Admitted Students' Day, etc. Become familiar with academic regulations and university business core requirements. Provide coverage of the Peer Advisor Office by maintaining 12 schedule hours per week for each semester of the academic year. Actively participate in weekly 2 hour staff meetings that include professionalism, collaboration, brain-storming, & creating programs. Provide support to the Niblock Student Center by working on projects that include but are not limited to: facilitating group advising presentations, serving as a back up drop-in advisor, preparing curriculum guides, and calling/texting campaigns. Participate in in training prior to the start of fall classes and continuous training via weekly staff meetings. Meet weekly with assigned Academic & Career Coach mentor for progress discussion and professional/career development. Specific requirements include: Must be a full-time undergraduate student in the Belk College of Business. Must be on track to declare an upper level business major by the end of Spring 2026. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Must have the intention of being enrolled in at UNC Charlotte through the entire 2026-2027 academic year (no study abroad or mid-year graduates) Must have excellent communication & interpersonal skills and an ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be eager to serve current and prospective Belk College of Business students.

Learning Experience
Peer Advisors meet weekly with their assigned Academic & Career Coach mentor for progress discussions as well as individual professional & career development discussions. Students complete a portfolio to encompass their learning and experiences from this program and internship. Additionally, during staff meetings, students learn about personal and professional development with guest speakers from the staff and university resources.
