BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:

The Category Product Data Specialist is responsible for inducting new items, maintaining, analyzing, normalizing and enriching product data for assigned product lines, following data governance practices and merchandising guidelines to prepare and import data, and verifying data directly with suppliers or other applicable sources as needed. This position requires day to day communication and collaboration with a cross-functional team consisting of members from Category Merchandising, Data Governance, Digital and MSC's supplier community.

The Specialist will participate in a high-performance and inclusive culture, leveraging current and new technology, and embracing continuous process improvement to continue to deliver value and a superior web experience to MSC's customers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with suppliers and approved third parties to collect product information and digital assets in support of enrichment and new item induction, working with Category, Data Governance and Digital Assets teams to ensure that the product data is accurate, relevant, consistent with the existing assortment, and follow data governance rules.

  • Uses data collection and analysis tools for product information data collection and import into Product Information Management (PIM) system.

  • Migrates data from multiple sources and formats into an acceptable format for importing.

  • Researches and analyzes multiple data sources to determine correct operational data values and attributes.

  • Develops subject matter expertise in various product categories.

  • Owns supplier relationships for product information purposes, including accuracy of data and formatting, image induction, SKU Development and New Item Induction (NII).

  • Manages quality assurance and delivery of medium to large complexity New Item Induction projects and plans

  • Initiates and leads product information processes for a broad set of internal customers - Category Management, Exclusive Brands, Supplier Business Management, Marketing, and Imaging to facilitate growth of the business, ensure accuracy of product data, and enable meeting project deadlines.

  • Researches and analyzes multiple sources in order to determine correct operational data values and attributes.

  • Develops new approaches to current process roadblocks to improve overall efficiency.

  • Generates and analyzes reports including but not limited to project and plan status, NII New items, Data Quality.

  • Reviews and analyzes product information data to normalize data inconsistencies.

  • Accountable for the quality, fill rate and normalization of product data for assigned product lines, and responsible for executing enrichment or enhancement activity to drive improvements.

  • Tracks and balances induction and enrichment activities to support the priorities of the business unit.

  • Works with suppliers to drive efficient, and effective induction and enrichment activities and educates suppliers on the importance of high quality product data and MSC requirements.

  • Participates in special projects or perform additional duties as required. Participates in special data collection projects to comply with government regulations, including Country of Origin, or to support other compliance or operational needs.

  • Recognizes and identifies blockers or opportunities for process improvements with data collection projects.

  • Understands the need for metadata and proficiently describes data so it can be understood by others.

  • Recognizes the benefits and costs of data preservation and curates data for future use.

  • Provides superior customer service and communication to cross-functional team members on deliverables

  • Uses self-directed learning to develop deeper understanding of assigned product lines

  • Adapts to and embraces new technology that drives process enhancements

  • Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC's vision and unity of purpose.

  • Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required

    QUALIFICATIONS

    What You Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Business Management or related field

  • Minimum of three years of experience working with information models and product information systems

  • Five year of business experience required.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft technologies and environments

  • Demonstrated ability to sort and validate data for quality, completeness and coherence

  • Understanding of eCommerce merchandising and how customers use product data to make purchasing decisions

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate and communicate with technical and non-technical teams are required.

  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously are required.

  • Strong organizational skills are required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally as part of a team

    Bonus Points If You Have:

  • SAP, Jira, STIBO STEP, Alteryx, SmartSheet, Power BI, Tableau, Looker preferred

  • Knowledge of industrial, metalworking or MRO products preferred

    Other Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel up to 10% of the time may be required.

  • This position may require access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations Information ("ITAR") and/or Controlled Unclassified Information ("CUI")
