Join the Office of Regional Development to assist in the research and development of a permanent supportive housing needs assessment. In this position, you will support a team that is researching the housing needs for Salt Lake County's very low-income households and those who are experiencing homelessness. You will get firsthand experience managing user research, gathering data from public sources, creating interactive dashboards, and presenting your work to policymakers. The Office of Regional Development works collaboratively with state and local governments, businesses, and community organizations to support healthy, vibrant, and accessible communities for all Salt Lake County residents. The divisions within the Office of Regional Development highlight the breadth of our programs. These divisions include:

    We are seeking applicants with an interest in affordable housing, homelessness and who have strong quantitative analysis skills and the ability to communicate research to a general audience. Under the direction of our Housing and Community Development Director and our Housing Section Manager, you will participate in the development of the needs assessment by gathering data from state data sources, interviewing service providers, researching best practices, exploring housing types and costs, drafting visualization ideas for feedback, creating data dashboards, developing narratives, and documenting sources to provide the right information for the right users in the right format.

    Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. The primary work location will be the Salt Lake County Government Center. Telework is allowed up to three days per week, although we highly recommend more time in the office for networking and activities with the internship cohort. Applicants must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor OR Graduate program.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • G ather, analyze, and interpret data that informs policy.

  • P repare concise reports and presentations to explain research findings.

  • R ead and interpret complex laws, regulations, ordinances, and reports.

  • M anage projects and relationships with internal and external research partners.

  • D eliver executive briefings on research and policy options for elected officials and other leaders.

  • P articipate in professional development programs offered by Intern Program Managers.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • E xcellent quantitative analysis skills.

  • E xcellent written and oral communication skills.

  • U nderstanding of the principles and functions of local government.

  • A bility to complete tasks under deadlines.

  • C uriosity, creativity, adaptability, and attention to detail.

  • B e a team player who also excels as an individual contributor.

  • M ust be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor OR Graduate program.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • E xperience or coursework in public policy, economics, finance, public budgeting, or related field.

  • E xperience or coursework in urban planning, housing, transportation, community development, economic development, or related field.

    PAY:$15.00/Hr.

    START DATE:The internship begins May 20, 2024, and ends August 2, 2024

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Intern may work remotely or from the Salt Lake County Government Center. They will be provided with a computer and an email account. Intern may be asked to attend meetings off-site, at other government facilities, and in the community. Intern may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.

An "At Will", FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.
