Job Description
University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE) Graduate Teaching Assistants facilitate and develop academic support programming for the UNC Charlotte campus community. More information about the UCAE and its various programs and services can be found at ucae.charlotte.edu.
The UCAE has multiple Masters-level Graduate Teaching Assistant positions available for the 2025-2026 academic year. These 20-hours-per-week positions support the UCAE as a whole and are assigned to work primarily within a specific programmatic area of UCAE. The salary is $1,555 per month paid as a stipend, plus in-state tuition. Candidates will be reviewed for their overall fit within the UCAE and each of the open positions.

UNC Charlotte Graduate Assistant Qualifications
All UNC Charlotte Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Graduate Teaching Assistants are expected to register for at least six credits each semester, and must work no more than 20 hours per week in the assistantship and other work combined. Continuance of the assistantship is contingent upon satisfactory performance in all course work as well as GTA duties in the UCAE.
Responsibilities for All UCAE Positions
- Represent the UCAE in campus outreach including presentations, fairs, and information tables.
- Assist with closing duties at least one day each week, the UCAE closes at 7pm Monday-Thursday
- Participation in orientation, training, and professional development activities as assigned.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of every student interaction including meetings and phone/internet support.
- Assist with UCAE projects and perform other duties as requested.
Available UCAE Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Learning Strategies GTA
The Learning Strategies Program offers academic consultations, workshops, and classroom presentations to help students strengthen their academic skills. Graduate Teaching Assistants:
- Conduct individual academic skill consultations with students, working to help them identify and overcome areas of academic difficulty through specific strategies and follow-up appointments.
- Interpret LASSI (Learning and Study Strategies Inventory) assessment results and assist students in developing strategies to improve in lower scoring areas.
- Create and facilitate workshops, presentations, and similar projects.
- Oversee and manage all aspects of at least one UCAE outreach event including concept development, budget, vendor arrangements, donor requests, staffing, marketing, and evaluation.
- Develop and disseminate UCAE and Learning Strategies marketing and outreach materials.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office and G Suite products.
Learning Strategies - Peer Coaching GTA
The 49er Connect program pairs students with undergraduate peer coaches called Success Guides, who provide academic support to students throughout the semester through regular email communication and individual meetings. The Peer Coaching Graduate Teaching Assistant will:
- Assist with the supervision of undergraduate Success Guides
- Communicate regularly with Success Guides and students enrolled in 49er Connect.
- Develop and present Success Guide training in Fall & Spring semesters.
- Attend weekly staff meetings / trainings throughout the semester: Wednesdays, 9-10 am.
- Coordinate occasional social events for students enrolled in 49er Connect.
- Assist with the program’s administrative tasks using Canvas, Connect/Navigate, and Google Workspace tools.
- Assist with assessment and evaluation of the program, and provide input for future program developments.
- As available, assist with other Learning Strategies operations, such as academic consultations and workshops.
Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) GTA
The PAL program focuses on providing well-structured study group sessions for historically difficult undergraduate courses. Sessions are led by undergraduate students who have completed the course with an outstanding grade. Graduate Teaching Assistants assist in training and supervising undergraduate student leaders to provide the most effective course support services to all students. Graduate Teaching Assistants:
- Supervise up to 40 undergraduate PAL leaders in a Course Support Service professional setting.
- Coordinate, plan, and facilitate CRLA leader training sessions in collaboration with the Peer Assisted Learning Professional Staff.
- Create and disseminate PAL and UCAE-related marketing and outreach materials to students and faculty.
- Maintain Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel databases for PAL session attendance, including weekly reports.
- Manage the program email account, maintain consistent communication with PAL administrative staff and PAL leaders, conduct student leader observations, maintain PAL Canvas Project pages, and coordinate PAL leader schedules.
- Assist with the hiring process for undergraduate student employees.
- Complete all administrative tasks as assigned by the Course Support Professional Staff.
- Must be a self-starter and have initiative to solve problems on their own. Proficient in using Zoom, Canvas, G Suite, and Microsoft Excel. Must be detail-oriented.
Tutorial Services (TS) GTA
Tutorial Services provides peer tutoring via appointment and drop-in hours for over 150 undergraduate courses on campus. Graduate Teaching Assistants:
- Supervise 65-75 undergraduate Peer Tutors in an academic support service professional setting.
- Under the leadership of the Assistant Director for Tutoring and Program Assistant for Course Support Services, carry out all administrative and operational assignments as assigned.
- Manage the program email account and Canvas site, operate the tutor availability and student appointment scheduling system CONNECT, and maintain consistent written and verbal communication with students and tutors.
- Conduct tutor observations and provide thoughtful feedback.
- Coordinate, plan, and facilitate student staff training certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
- Use Microsoft Excel, GSuite, and other systems to track programmatic data for reporting and strategic decision-making for improved services.
- Assist with the hiring process for undergraduate student employees.
- Create marketing materials and participate in outreach events for Tutorial Services and UCAE.
Student Success (SS) GTA
Students Obtaining Success (SOS) is a peer-based mentoring program for undergraduate students experiencing academic difficulties or on academic probation. SOS is a semester-long program and is individually tailored to help students identify their unique challenges, improve academic performance, and return to good academic standing. SOS empowers students to identify strengths and challenges, develop academic and personal success strategies, and connect with appropriate campus resources. Graduate Teaching Assistants:
- Supervise up to ten undergraduate peer mentors who each work individually with a maximum of five mentees on academic probation.
- Communicate regularly with peer mentors and mentees.
- Develop and present initial peer mentor training in Fall & Spring semesters.
- Required to attend weekly staff meetings / trainings on one (1) of the following days / times each week throughout the semester: Tuesday, 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM or Wednesday, 12:15 PM - 1:15 PM
- Coordinate, plan, and facilitate Peer Mentor training through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
- Assist with the program’s administrative tasks through tracking and completing documentation using Canvas, Connect/Navigate, PowerPoint, Excel, and GSuite Tools.
- Assist with assessment and evaluation of the program, and provide input for future program developments.
- Assist with the hiring process for undergraduate student employees.
- Serve as a resource to all students in the program and direct students to other campus resources as appropriate.
UCAE Qualification for All Graduate Teaching Assistants
- Enthusiasm to work with UNC Charlotte students and a strong desire to help them succeed.
- Ability to create and foster interpersonal relationships with students and UCAE staff.
- Experience with public speaking and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Experience working in a peer support (preferably educationally-focused) capacity.
- Capability of working both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility and a willingness to work on both short- and long-term projects.
- Ability to complete projects in a deadline-driven environment.
